At the outbreak of the Civil War, he joined the Confederacy, a difficult decision for him because his wife's father was a supporter of Abraham Lincoln and was named United States consul to Trinidad de Cuba. He rose quickly in the ranks and died at Vicksburg, commanding the 6th Missouri Infantry. He is buried in the Lexington Cemetery in Kentucky.…
