"Published by the Friends of the Bancroft Library in collaboration with the California Arboretum Foundation, Inc." Susanna Bryant Dakin (nee Bryant; 1905-1966) was an American author and historian. While Dakin initially specialized in Southern California history, she came to research and write about Northern California as well. Dakin was active in a number of literary and botanical societies. She was one of the original members of the California Arboretum Foundation (which created the Los Angeles Arboretum in 1947), a fellow of the California Historical Society, and a founding sponsor of the Friends of the Library association. She was also involved with the Friends of the Bancroft Library, the Society of Asian Art, the American Field Service, Marin Country Day School, and Scripps College. Brothers Lawton Kennedy (1900-1980) and Alfred Kennedy (?-?) were both noted Bay Area printers. Lawton opened his own press in 1952 and worked with other noted Bay Area printers including John Henry Nash, Johnck & Seeger, Jane Grabhorn's Colt Press, and Albert Sperisen's Black Vine Press.…

Thomas Gray (1716-1771) was an English poet and scholar who is perhaps best-known for his Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard. It was an immediate success upon its initial publication in 1751 among critics and the general public alike. Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard is a rumination upon death and remembrance. In the poem, an unnamed narrator commemorates the "obscure," the country poor, who are buried in what many scholars have concluded is the churchyard of Church of St. Giles, Stoke Poges.
