Keilberth war siebzehnjährig bereits Korrepetitor am Staatstheater Karlsruhe, avancierte bald zum Kapellmeister und übernahm 1935 das Amt des Generalmusikdirektors. 1940 wurde er Leiter des Philharmonischen Orchesters…in Prag, 1945 musikalischer Oberleiter an der Dresdner Staatsoper, 1951 Leiter der Hamburger Philharmonie und zugleich Chefdirigent der Bamberger Philharmoniker; 1959 schließlich übernahm er die Generalmusikdirektion der Bayerischen Staatsoper in München.
