Compiled from Keesing's own news archive, it traces the breakdown of the alliance between the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China: the ideological quarrel that opened after Khrushchev's 1956 secret speech, the withdrawal of Soviet advisers in 1960, the public polemics of the early 1960s and the competition for influence over the world's communist parties. The report is a reference rather than an argument, arranged chronologically with extended quotation from the official statements, party letters and press exchanges of both sides, and it appeared in the year the dispute turned violent on the Ussuri River border.
