Dat Utrecht een belangrijke biernijverheid heeft gekend was tot nu toe een goed bewaard geheim. Toch heeft de Domst…ad in vroeger eeuwen zeker zestig brouwerijen geteld. De vertrouwde geur van mout moet eeuwenlang als een weeïge deken over de oude vestingstad hebben gehangen. Vrijwel alle brouwerijen stonden aan de Oudegracht, waar het water rechtstreeks uit de gracht in de bierketels werd geschept. Bier was van groot belang voor Utrecht, niet alleen omdat het door iedereen dagelijks in grote hoeveelheden werd gedronken, maar ook voor de stedelijke economie, die voor een groot deel draaide op de inkomsten uit de bieraccijnzen. De laatste brouwerij aan de Oudegracht, De Boog, werd in 1897 gesloten, weggeconcurreerd door de grote industriële brouwers, die met hun Beijersche bieren de markt veroverden. Zoals brouwerijDe Krans, die tot 1930 produceerde in een imposant gebouw aan de Croeselaan. In deze gids wandelt Kees Volkers door de bierhistorie van de Domstad. Die wandeling voert voor een groot deel langs de schitterende Oudegracht, waar nog altijd sporen uit het bierverleden aanwezig zijn. Tussendoor wordt een uitstapje gemaakt de provincie in. Ondertussen vertelt de schrijver over de strijd van de gildebrouwers met kloosterbrouwers, thuisbrouwers en buiten- brouwers, de geleidelijke achteruitgang van de brouwnijverheid, de overrompeling door de Beijersche bieren, en de ondergang van de laatste brouwer in de 20ste eeuw.Maar ook over de opmerkelijke revival van de biercultuur van de laatste decennia. Inmiddels telt Utrecht weer twee actieve brouwerijen, waaronder één aan de Oudegracht.
