La obra del novelista y poeta español debe considerarse la continuación más famosa de Los siete libros de la Diana (1561) de Jorge de Montemayor, una novela que creó género. Es sin duda alguna una de las obras pastorales más apreciadas de la literatura española. Interesante y fluida, combina verso y prosa y fue traducida a numerosas lenguas, entre ellas el latín en la versión del filólogo y escritor alemán Kaspar von Barth (1587-1658); una celebrada interpretación de gran mérito que con el paso del tiempo se ha convertido además en curiosidad bibliográfica.
