Karl Opfermann war von 1919 bis 1933 Mitglied in der Hamburgischen Sezession. - "Subskriptionseinladung unter dem Motto >Das ganze Hamburg soll es sein". Noch bemüht um den Aufbau der Gesellschaft um unseren großen Dichter Wilhelm Niemeyer, der Wilhelm-Niemeyer-Gesellschaft, deren erste Serie der Dichtergaben voraussichtlich im Frühjahr 1951 zur Veröffentlichung gelangen wird, ist in mir der Gedanke um die Ausführung des zweiten Buches "Das neue Hamburg" ausgereift. Das erste Buch erschien im Jahre 1921. Damals waren es stifterfreundliche Frauen und Männer, die durch Vorauszeichnungen der Stifter-Exemplare das Zustandekommen dieses Werkes ermöglichten. Schon der Prospekt konnte der Oeffentlichkeit die Namen der Stifter bekanntgeben. Es waren unter anderen: Frau Generalkonsul und Präsidentin des Hamburger Frauenklubs Bertha Rohlsen, die, wenn es sich um Kunst handelte, stets gebefreudige Frau Mynia Diez-Dührkoop, der immer tapfer und mutig in Sammlerbereitschaft stehende Konsul Max Leon Flemming, der immer um die hansische Kunst besonders bemühte Wilhelm Rump, der aller neuen Kunst aufrichtig aufgeschlossene Dr. Paul Rauert, der Kohlen-Großhändler Otto Blumenfeld, der Direktor Walter Hane und viele andere. Der damalige Direktor der Hamburger Kunsthalle, Professor Dr. Gustav Pauli, segnete das Werk, indem er einen persönlichen Beitrag zur Verfügung stellte, der ehrwürdige und kunstfreundliche Landgerichtsdirektor, der Liebermann-, Munch-, Nolde- und Kirchner-Biograph Dr. Gustav Schiefler und der damalige Direktor des Museums für Kunst und Gewerbe, Professor Dr. Max Sauerlandt, förderten das Werk schon vor dem Erscheinen. Redakteure, vor allen Dr. Carl Müller-Rastatt, Dr. M. K. Rohe und Dr. Hans W. Fischer bereiteten die Kunstfreunde auf das Erscheinen dieses Werkes vor. Das Werk gedieh unter so vielen segnenden Händen. Es wurde in der Druckerei Hartung & Co. unter Aufwendung besonderer Sorgfalt hergestellt. Als Druckschrift wurde die schmückende Czeschka-Antiqua verwendet. Die Stifter-Exemplare wurden auf Alt-Hamburg-Bütten gedruckt und von dem Hamburger Buchbindermeister Johannes Gerbers, unter Verwendung edelsten Materials, mit der Hand gebunden. Die zweite Ausgabe wurde auf Johann-Wilhelm-Bütten gedruckt, die dritte Ausgabe auf bestem Offset-Karton. Das war vor dreißig Jahren der Anfang, sozusagen der Keim dessen, was heute in Hamburg, wenn auch zum Teil schwer noch ringend, so doch mutig blüht und gedeiht: die junge Kunst. Nicht jeder Künstler vermag den mächtigen und gestaltenden Atem eines Karl Schmidt-Rottluff in sich zu tragen, nicht jeder Künstler spürt den Brand der Seele und den berauschenden Ausladungsdrang der Farbe eines Emil Nolde in sich, oder verfügt über den weltenbannenden künstlerischen Vortrag eines Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. Dennoch, wir haben, wenn wir von den ersten jungkünstlerischen Bemühungen eines Franz Nölken ausgehen und den in Hamburg schon klassisch gewordenen Heinrich Stegemann nicht aus den Augen verlieren, einen wahrhaft starken Künstlerkreis in Hamburg, dessen Ausstrahlung durch die vielen Gruppeneinteilungen heute noch in seiner Gesamterscheinung ein wenig getrübt, der aber, einmal zu einer Gesamtschau vereinigt, in Deutschland ein gewichtiges Wort mitzureden hat. Wir dürfen getrost ausgehen etwa von Eitner, Illies, Siebelist und Schaper, die in ihrer Zeit um neue Formen gerungen. Die äußersten Pole der heutigen künstlerischen Spannungen finden wir in dem Künstler-Ehepaar Friedrich Ahlers-Hestermann, der heute europäischen Ruhm genießt, und der Frau Pavorina, nach der Paula Modersohn-Becker die künstlerisch höchstbegnadete Frau Deutschlands ist. Als innere Achse aber nehmen wir ruhig zwei Künstler, die sich in gemäßigteren Zonen bewegen: den seit dreißig Jahren in Hamburg unermüdlich, aber fast in mönchischer Zurückgezogenheit arbeitenden Dichter und Maler Paulfried Martens. Seine träumendweichen, fürsorglichen und künsterlischen hochgestalteten Landschaften und Bildnisse sind immer wieder eine Wohltat für das kunstwillige und kunstgeübte Auge. Ein bedächtig stürmender, einmalig auch in seinen buchkünstlerischen Hervorbringungen, nimmt er im Rahmen der heutigen hansischen Kunst ungefähr die Rolle ein, die der stille Erich Heckel etwa in der Brücke-Bewegung inne hatte. Dann den Maler Adolf Przibill, der unermüdlich und mit immer jungem Herzen um die zärtlichsten und seelisch bewegtesten Dinge bemüht ist. Bauen wir nun da herum nur die fünfzig besten Maler und Bildhauer unserer Stadt, nehmen wir auch einige der neuwilligen Gebrauchsgraphiker dazu, dann haben wir, bei strengstem Maßstab, ein gewichtiges Werk. Wir erlebten kürzlich in München, das eine halbe Million Einwohner zählt, eine innige Einheit zwischen Staat, Stadt und Künstlern. München unterhält seine viertausend Künstler. Hamburg zählt reichlich eine und eine halbe Million Einwohner und wird seine vielleicht hundert mutig schaffenden Künstler auch unterhalten. Ich glaube an die Wiederkehr einer guten hansischen Tradition, die ich zu einem Teil noch miterleben durfte. Erinnernd noch an die guten zwanziger Jahre, wo eine Subskription sich bei dem Generaldirektor Max Köpcke in Sekundenschnelle vollzog. Nur ein kurzes: "Womit kann ich dienen" und die Vorausbestellung war unterschrieben. Damals waren Stadt, Kunst und Gesellschaft eine eng verbundene Einheit und in stetiger Bereitschaft, der Kunst zu dienen. Frauen und Männer eiferten miteinander. Das Hamburger Rathaus strömte damals eine das künstlerische Leben befruchtende Wärme aus. Professor Dr. Max Sauerlandt war für Emil Nolde entbrannt und kämpfte für diesen, Dr. Rosa Schapire, wenn sie auch für Karl Schmidt-Rottluff im besonderen einstand, kämpfte für die gesamte "Brücke". Professor Lothar Schreyer kämpfte für die Künstler des "Blau.
