Edition originale de ce roman, enrichi d'un envoi autographe à Georges de Beauregard (1854-1919), maire du Blanc (Indre) puis député de l'Indre à deux reprises. Jules de Vorys est d'ailleurs originaire de l'Indre et on lui doit la réédition des Esquisses pittoresques de l'Indre. Ce roman est une critique virulente de son époque, avec un fort accent politique. On y ressent ainsi l'influence du nationalisme de son époque, une pointe d'antisémitisme dans le contexte de l'affaire Dreyfus, une position promilitariste et aussi, chose plus rare à l'époque, la sensibilité légitimiste de l'auteur qui parle de Don Carlos, à une époque où cet héritier du trône de France était oublié quasiment de tous. Ainsi (p.8), un cyrard, Biscuit, qui dit : "- A genoux, pékin! Le voyou terrifié s'agenouille. - Et que cela t'apprenne à respecter l'armée ! conclut Biscuit en l'envoyant rouler dans le ruisseau." Broché, petits manques aux bords de la couverture, ouvrage un peu gondolé par une mauvaise position (pas par l'humidité), mouillure très marginale au début de l'ouvrage. Ouvrage rare.
