One of the more visually striking plates from Adam's suite documenting the exhumation, return, and state funeral of Napoleon in 1840. The plate forms part of Victor Adam's Retour en France des Depouilles Mortelles de Napoleon, a suite of twenty lithographs documenting the Retour des Cendres. The scene depicts the elaborate funeral carriage constructed for Napoleon's remains during the state ceremonies surrounding the return of his body from St Helena to France. The monumental catafalque-like design, draped in imperial emblems and drawn by richly caparisoned horses, reflects the theatrical and political character of the July Monarchy's rehabilitation of the Napoleonic legend under Louis-Philippe. This plate is from the original first edition of the complete series of twenty large-format lithographs issued in Paris in 1840.

The candlelit funerary interior, dominated by imperial eagles and Napoleonic emblems, reflects the carefully orchestrated political symbolism surrounding the repatriation of the emperor's body under Louis-Philippe. This plate is from the original first edition of the complete series of twenty large-format lithographs issued in Paris in 1840.

Annotations au crayon sur passepartout. Voir photos et description pour plus de details. Apparues vers 1740, ces estampes etaient specifiquement concues pour etre visionnees a travers un appareil appele "zograscope" ou une lanterne magique. La perspective : Le dessin accentue volontairement les lignes de fuite pour creer une illusion de profondeur saisissante. L'inversion : Le titre en haut de la gravure est souvent imprime a l'envers (en miroir) pour apparaitre correctement une fois reflete dans le miroir de l'appareil d'optique. L'usage : Veritable ancetre de la 3D, elles permettaient aux curieux de l'epoque de "voyager" immobile a travers l'Europe et le monde.
