Au poète Théodore Wains-Desfontaines (1804-1844) qui devait lui envoyer son recueil de poésies Mes éphémères. « Monsieur, il m'a été impossible de faire jusqu'à aujourd'hui ce…que vous me demandez car je n'ai pas reçu votre ouvrage. Nous n'avons ici que des journaux politiques. Je ne participe directement à aucun. Ne partageant pas leurs passions j'avais crû pouvoir d'abord, en me réfugiant dans la partie exclusivement littéraire, donner alternativement à tous les deux. On a trouvé ici cela fort mauvais car les hommes de parti veulent à toute force que l'on soit comme eux. Alors je me suis complètement retiré. Je crois cependant, Monsieur, si vous m'envoyez votre ouvrage, pouvoir vous promettre, non pas l'insertion d'un article, mais celle d'une note d'une vingtaine de lignes que j'aurai beaucoup de plaisir à rédiger. Croyez bien que je ferai tout ce qui dépendra de moi. Quand à [Jean] Reboul, il a toujours bien accueilli les envois qu'on lui adresse. Le vôtre du reste est de nature à ne devoir vous laisser aucune des craintes que vous m'exprimez. Recevez mes salutations empressées. Jles Canonge. Jasmin a raison d'attacher de l'importantes à ses poésies. Il y a là une originalité de fonds et une fermeté de forme bien rares à toutes les époques. Certains de ses récits n'eussent pas eu plus de charme dans la bouche de La Fontaine. Si vous lisez attentivement son Aveugle de Castel-Culier, vous partagerez mon opinion ; c'est un des plus délicieux poèmes que je connaisses ; tout y est neuf et admirablement senti.
