Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good Plus. 1st Edition. Stated First Printing, First Edition. Once listed, this will be the Only non-library dust jacketed hardcover for sale on the Internet. The hardcover is quite rare with or without a jacket. And this will be the Only signed copy of the book, including hardcovers and paperbacks. The inscription is on the mustard-colored front first end paper (which is in excellent condition). It reads: 'To Goldie-- I'm writing in this so you can't take it back to Doubleday. I hope you like it as I value your opinion especially. Your ever-loving sister Judy, September, 1961.' Happily, both the book and the dust jacket are in excellent condition. The dust jacket has always been protected by a fitted cover. You can see the covers of the book in the photos. What a pleasure not to see any conspicuous wear. The covers are exceptionally clean. The red lettering on the front and spine is very bright. The edges and the corners are in excellent shape (the front middle edge has one tiny, shallow dent). The top page edge is a light red. All three page edges are in excellent shape (the middle page edge has one speck of a spot). Both inside covers and end papers are in excellent shape. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The pages are all in excellent condition. They are exceptionally clean. Scrolling through, I didn't see any soiling at all. I'm not finding any creasing. There are no markings. No attachments. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. As I mentioned, the dust jacket has been protected by a fitted cover. It has made the difference. The white covers are not stained or soiled. They have very little wear, no tears. There are a few thin, not terribly conspicuous, creases on the spine. There's some crinkling at the bottom edge of the spine. The rear cover with the photograph of the author is in excellent shape. The flaps are in excellent shape, quite clean (a tiny bit of toning at the top edge of the rear flap), no tears. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. This was Judith Heiman's first novel. She wrote it at the age of 28, and remarkably it was turned into a television soap opera by the same name which aired on CBS right after General Hospital from 1964 to 1966. 'From an early age she moved in social, publishing and show business circles. Dorothy Fields, the Broadway lyricist, was a maternal relative. She was heralded as Andy Warhol's first muse by Baby Jane Holzer. Warhol not only did her photo portrait but she starred in his first movie, The Kiss, on permanent display at MOMA. She was also reportedly close to Frank Sinatra and Neil Sheehan, the late Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winning Vietnam War correspondent. She and her husband (she became Judith Green), who was more than 20 years her senior, 'were known for their lavish entertaining for, among others, Frank and Barbara Sinatra, Ann and Morton Downey, Gregory and Veronique Peck, Kirk and Anne Douglass, Barbara Walters, Alan Greenspan, Peter Duchin, Jessica Tandy, Zoe Caldwell, Arlene Francis, Edgar Bronfman Sr., Joe Raposo, Mark Goodson, Mike Wallace, Bennett and Phyllis Cerf, Rosalind Russell and Freddie Brisson, Pamela and Leland Hayward, and Claudette Colbert.' From the dust jacket: 'This is a story of the dangers and discontents of suburban life among today's "young marrieds"-- by a talented new novelist who might have been one of them, but isn't. Judith Heiman centers her provocative story around the marriage of Peggy and Ken Mosley-- a marriage that began in a glow of romance and that seems, to outsiders, to be everything a marriage should be. The story of Peggy and Ken-- and the wives, husbands and lovers who surround them-- is the story of the disillusionment and boredom of many young married couples in today's prosperous but stultifying world.'. Inscribed by Author(s).
