Reconstruction of identities by using literary texts in specific context of Punjab is the central motif of the present volume. It is a collective effort to understand the evolution of the Punjabi society in terms of religion gender caste class and rivalry. Starting from the 18 century text the volume explores various facets of the social life of Punjab till the end of colonial period. Despite the varying approaches of the contributors it seems clear that there was a definite change in the way religion and gender in particular were constructed across time that spans three centuries. In the case of religion there has been a movement from composite religious practices to the construction of singular religious tradition which was done in a way that culminated into the communal riots and killing and displacement of millions of Punjabis. The construction of gender presents the most interesting dimension of the Punjabi Society. The struggle of woman against patriarchy becomes visible even in the 18 century and in the 19 century the first Punjabi woman poet Peero raises the voice against suppression and marginality of woman in the Punjabi Society. An endeavour towards the construction of gender identity in the 19 century became simultaneously an act of creation of religious boundaries as was evident in the writings of Bhai Vir Singh. Further an attempt has been made to show how these identities form the crucial element in the dynamism of society. The historical and sociological evidence corroborates the interpretation of select literary texts to understand the Punjabi Society. Seen historically the interpretative analyses of the texts show tremendous continuity in the forging reinterpretation and reconstruction of identities. The synthesis and fission of religious identities created contestation that culminated into riots at a historical moment. In a way the volume shows the process through which the Punjabi society passed from pre colonial to the colonial period. 214 pp.

Cities were the seats of exercise of colonial power and all decisions were taken in the urban centres. On top of all these challenges was the socio-cultural diversity of the country's population. The members of the Constituent Assembly dominated by the Congressmen who were mostly the freedom fighters under Gandhi, took upon themselves to meet the daunting task of drafting the Constitution which would seek to resolve all contradictions and take the country on the path of not only development but also nation-building. Imagining radiant future for India might seem quixotic during the late 1940s, but there were many such members who had the optimism of transforming India into a modern state, combining both the ancient Indian traditions with the western modernity, whereas some of them were of the convinced view that socialism was the only solution to a backward, illiterate, poor and rural India with some oases of prosperity, modernity, education and urbanism. Four dimensions namely education empowerment emigration and entrepreneurship have been examined to map the changing character of Dalits. In comparison to other states Punjab is often considered free from acute caste based inequalities and atrocities though caste system exists and prevails in the structure of everyday life of the Punjabis. It has been argued that certain visible changes have occurred among the Dalits of Punjab. Not all the castes among the Dalits have been able to transform their social and economic conditions altered their self perception as well as their status. More mobile castes particularly the Ad dharmis have constructed their own distinct and insulated world in which the Dalit and self have become coterminous and all other Dalit castes have been decentred from the discourse of caste equality. The urban Dalits have undergone rapid change in their conditions which they transformed into political empowerment at the local level. Despite the changes there are certain aspects of their social life which have not undergone change. Much of this is related to the consciousness of the Dalits. The existence and belief in the caste hierarchy could be gauged from the fact that they still are predominantly favouring caste endogamy. 234 pp.

The Sikh militant movement spanned one and a half decades during which a considerable loss of life occurred in and outside Punjab. In terms of its spread it almost became international in character largely due to the presence of diaspora Sikhs in most of the western world. This work is based on the analysis of the speeches and messages of the leaders of the militant movement. It has been argued without essentializing the problematic that the nature of discourse of the militant movement could be traced back to the construction of Sikhism in the second half of the nineteenth century. The ideology of the Singh Sabha movement and its attempt at the construction of singular religious identity provided the dynamics to the Sikh community. In the process the religious tradition was invented which emphasized the singular Sikh identity by paving the way for the fundamentalist discourse of separatism. The composite religious tradition in Sikhism was put at the margin of the community as a result of which it became possible to construct Sikh nationhood. Coupled with this construction was the attempt of the militants to purge the community from all syncretism practised by the Sikhs. It has been argued that despite this construction the Sikh community has continued to observe the composite tradition though the threat of militant violence greatly reduced the eclectic space of inter subjective communitarian understanding and interaction. 278 pp.

Punjabi popular music has transcended the linguistic boundaries in terms of popularity in recent times and several Punjabi singers have become household names in India and abroad. By experimenting with the emerging western styles through fusion music it has taken the music industry by storm in India. H…owever, the cultural roots of Punjabi music have continued to be unchanged with minor refinements. The present work treats culture as a flowing river and based on the premise that the modernity, as it is conceived in the capitalist mode of production marked by mass consumption, may not necessarily transform the music by making the already existing musical tradition redundant. On the other hand, governed by the profit orientation of mass circulation, the same musical traditions are modified to cater to the needs of masses at wider scale. In the already existing paradigm established through the stories of epic romances, such as Heer-Ranjha and Mirza-Sahiban, the contemporary Punjabi music continues to reinforce the same by refining and modifying the modes of representation.
