HC. B&W illustrations (illustrator). 190pp The first part of this book is historical and sets out to trace the development of rockets and rocket propulsion to the point where the threat to Britain's security from Hitler's V1 and V2 weapons was brought to nothing by the counter-measures of the Allies. The second part is written to analyze the effects, political and military, that long-range rockets carrying atomic or nuclear warheads can have on the policies of those nations that can produce and use them. good w/lightly chipped dustjacket (hardcover).

Octavo, blue cloth (hardcover), silver letters, 258 pp. Very Good, with speckling to edges; in a Very Good, mylar protected dust jacket with edgewear. From dust jacket: "In earlier books," says Sir Philip, "I attempted a contribution to the history of the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force, but a life spent in the services brings many experiences not suited to inclusion in such records. Some could not be told till now because the people concerned were still alive, some infringe on security and cannot be told even yet in exact detail as they happened, and some belong to the lighter side of my career. From time top time I may have availaed myself of storyteller's licence, but, oddly enough, on those very occasions when my publisher accused me of having most drawn the long bow I could truthfully plead innocence -- life is like that." From the time when he learned to fly, in days when a handy piece of string might make the difference between a crash and a good landing, to his specialization in radar while at the Air Ministry during the Second World War, Sir Phliip Joubert has always been at the focus of events. Gifted with a zest for travel, an eye for foibles of character, a lively turn as a raconteur, and an unihibited love of good food, he makes the ideal companion behind the scenes of the historical events he commemorated more formallyin The Fated Sky and such other studies as Rocket (the story of Peenemunde), Birds and Fishes (Coast Command), and The Forgotten Ones (a tribute to the Ground Crews). Not least in interest are the years of his retirement, when he tackled a number of daunting projects, and developed his interests in such directions as exotic cookery and science fiction. The beginnings of Coastal Command are obscure. It is held by some that, in embryo, it consisted of five officers and four Bleriot monoplanes that were detached from Netheravon in August 1914 for coastal reconnaissance duties. At this time, however, there was a flourishing Naval Air Service which had its being up and down our coasts and which could properly be regarded as a coastal air force. In 1918 the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service were amalgamated into the Royal Air Force. By this time there were many aircraft of all sorts employed on coast watching, convoy protection and the attack of submarines, and very effectively they carried out their duties. After the war this coastal organization was much reduced in size, being composed of a few flying boat squadrons and one or two torpedo carrying units. In addition, the disembarked squadrons of the carrier borne air force were controlled and administered by what was then known as the Coastal Area. When, however, under the menace of Hitler, the expansion of the Royal Air Force took place, Coastal Area, by that time renamed Coastal Command, took its share. Working in close cooperation with the Royal Navy, the Command developed the activities which are so well described in this book. Coastal Command has always been a rather independent part of the Royal Air Force. Its operations have an element of mystery about them which is a trifle aggravating to the rest of the Service. It has a jealous spirit of its own which makes its personnel, when they are posted away, hanker to come back and strive and contrive to that end unceasingly. It is immensely proud of its job and of the way it does it. In fact, it has all the attributes of a first class team. Long may it flourish as such. Little seems to be known about Sqadron Leader Tom Dudley-Gordon, Sir Philip Joubert de la Ferte (1887-1965), occupied a number of senior staff appointments and returned to his former post as Air Officer Commanding in Chief Coastal Command at the outbreak of WWII. Scarce in this first impression.
