In degree he is immensely my superior - he is what I should like to be but have not the brains enough to be." 27 of Lovecraft's letters to Galpin survive and are printed here. They cover a period of more than twenty years and touch on amateur journalism, socialism, Lovecraft's dreams, his early stories and more. Edited and annotated by Joshi and Schultz, this hefty volume should help to shed some light on a side of Lovecraft previously unexamined.

Trade paperback, New, 441 pp. Cover artwork by: Anastasia Damianakos "Lovecraft's correspondents were scattered all over the country, and he found it engaging to be in touch with individuals from those areas of the United States where he had never been. Letters to two correspondents from the Pacific Northwest, Duane W. Rimel and F. Lee Baldwin, fill the bulk of this volume, and they reveal Lovecraft's customary role of tutor and mentor to young devotees of weird fiction in the 1930s. As a novice writer of weird fiction, Rimel came in touch with Lovecraft to seek assistance on improving his work and getting it published in pulp or fan magazines. In the course of their relationship, Lovecraft helped Rimel on as many as three stories"The Sorcery of Alphar," "The Tree on the Hill," and "The Disinterment." He gave Rimel valuable advice on the technique of writing weird fiction. Baldwin was a fan of weird fiction who assisted in the establishment of the first fantasy fanzine, the Fantasy Fan. Later he wrote one of the earliest biographical articles on Lovecraft (with a linoleum cut of Lovecraft by Rimel). Lovecraft wrote extensively to Baldwin about his writing, his attempts at drawing, and other matters that illuminate many aspects of his life and work. A third correspondent in this volume, Nils Frome, was a Canadian fan of weird and science fiction whom Lovecraft instructed on matters ranging from astronomy to occultism.".

Trade paperback, New, 601 pp. Cover artwork by: Jason Van Hollander "Clark Ashton Smith and August Derleth came in touch in 1930 through their mutual colleague H. P. Lovecraft. Thus began a thirty-year association that ended only with Smith's death in 1961. Their letters afford an intimate glimpse into the lives of two working writers. They offer a rare opportunity to see how Derleth managed his writing and also his growing publishing company, Arkham House, even to the particulars of content selection, royalty payments, and so on. Derleth's concern for Smith's well-being is manifestly evident, as is the commitment of Derleth and Donald Wandrei to publishing Smith's greatest bookeven if it meant twenty-two years of enduring patience to do so. For his part, Smith clearly regarded Derleth as a friend, colleague, and financial lifeline. Even if their interests somewhat diverged in their later years, they both cherished each other's association and worked together where they feasibly could. These letters chronicle the heyday and then the demise of Weird Tales and other pulp magazines; the establishment of what long remained the leading small press in the weird fiction field; and many other personal and literary issues that illuminate the minds and personalities of their authors. The volume has been thoroughly edited annotated by David E. Schultz and S. T. Joshi, two of the leading authorities on both writers, and includes exhaustive bibliographical information on all works cited in the letters.".

Talman was a late member of the Kalem Club, the group of literati who gathered around H. P. Lovecraft during his years in New York (192426). In the 1920s Talman attempted to write weird fiction, and Lovecraft's letters to him feature extensive advice on the story he revised for Talman, 'Two Black Bottles'; Lovecraft also wrote a 6000-word synopsis for a story, 'The Pool,' that Talman never wrote; the synopsis is here presented in an appendix. But Talman soon moved to other interests, and in his correspondence Lovecraft discusses such diverse subjects as Dutch settlement of the American colonies, the Greek calendar, and his wide-ranging travels.".

Jason Van Hollander (illustrator). New York: Hippocampus Press:, 2024. First edition, TPBO, Trade paperback, New, 426 pp. Cover artwork by: Jason Van Hollander "The joint correspondence of four titans of the Lovecraft Circle sheds fascinating light on the complex interplay of the personal and professional lives of these writers, artists, editors, and collectors. R. H. Barlow initiated much of the correspondence, seeking to preserve manuscripts and other material in what he called the 'Vaults of Yoh-Vombis.' Barlow discussed plans to publish a variety of Smith's poetry, but these ultimately came to nothing. Similarly, he wished to issue a volume of Howard Wandrei's weird artwork, but Howard's brother put an end to the idea. H. P. Lovecraft is a focal point of discussion in all the correspondence. Donald Wandrei developed an enmity to Barlow, in part because Wandrei falsely believed that Barlow had stolen Lovecraft's books and manuscripts, even though he had been declared Lovecraft's literary executor. When Wandrei was helping August Derleth found Arkham House, he urged Derleth, Smith, and others to shun Barlow, with the result that Barlow was essentially driven out of the field. This volume presents an invaluable glimpse into the world of weird and pulp fiction in the 1930s and 1940s, as each writer displays the distinctive traits that have made him a renowned figure in the genre." David C. Verba (illustrator). New York: Hippocampus Press:, 2011. Trade paperbacks, Two volumes, Fine, 511 pp. Cover artwork by: David C. Verba "H. P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard are two of the titans of weird fiction of their era. Dominating the pages of Weird Tales in the 1920s and 1930s, they have gained worldwide followings for their compelling writings and also for the very different lives they led. The two writers came in touch in 1930, when Howard wrote to Lovecraft via Weird Tales. A rich and vibrant correspondence immediately ensued. Both writers were fascinated with the past, especially the history of Roman and Celtic Britain, and their letters are full of intriguing discussions of contemporary theories on this subject. Gradually, a new discussion came to the fore-a complex dispute over the respective virtues of barbarism and civilization, the frontier and settled life, and the physical and the mental. Lovecraft, a scion of centuries-old New England, and Howard, a product of recently settled Texas, were diametrically opposed on these and other issues, and each writes compellingly of his beliefs, attitudes, and theories. The result is a dramatic debate-livened by wit, learning, and personal revelation-that is as enthralling as the fiction they were writing at the time. All the letters have been exhaustively annotated by the editors." Now available in this sturdy and attractive French-wrap trade paperback edition. Trade paperbacks, Two volumes, Fine,

Trade paperback, New, 392 pp. Cover artwork by: Jason Van Hollander "The correspondence begins in 1913, when Smith was still under the poetic tutelage of George Sterling. Sterling was also attempting to help Loveman secure a wider audience for his poetry. The two authors' discussions of the aesthetics of poetry-both their own and the work of such poets as John Keats, Percy Bysshe Shelley, John Clare, and many others-are compelling. Loveman, having become involved in the book trade, would often pass along rare and tempting volumes to Smith, whose ability to secure books was limited. As such, fascinating discussions arise on the unusual and esoteric books they each absorbed. Smith also recounts the poor health that dogged him in the 1910s, while Loveman was drafted into the U.S. army toward the end of World War I and underwent hardship at a military camp in Georgia. The correspondence of these two pioneering poets-extending sporadically all the way down to 1941-is a testament to each writer's devotion to pure literature as a solace and balm against the vicissitudes of life. It is a lesson we can all appreciate today." This is a print-on-demand edition.
