Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 2-X-3-inch patch to bottom of front pastedown at the gutter appears to have been damp; leather rubbed at top of spine and modest erosion to powder-blue paper at top left of front board, exposing the black leather beneath. The Deseret Alphabet is a phonemic English-language spelling reform developed between 1847 and 1854 by the Board of Regents of the University of Deseret in Utah under the leadership of Brigham Young. George D. Watt is reported to have been the most actively involved in the development of the script's novel characters. In 1868-9, after much difficulty creating suitable metal type fonts, Brigham Young commissioned Russell's American Steam Printing House, a New York City based font foundry, to design the Bodoni-esque font. At least four books were published in the new alphabet, all transcribed by Orson Pratt and all using the Russell's House font: The First Deseret Alphabet Reader (1868), The Second Deseret Alphabet Reader (1868), The Book of Mormon (1869), and (as here) a Book of Mormon excerpt called First Nephi-Omni (1869), intended as the first of three to be used as a third school reader, which would be "for use in the schools of the Territory, the whole forming too cumbrous a volume for class use." The new alphabet was a failure -- Mormons who could already read English didn't need it, and several sources identify the arrival of the transcontinental railroad, which increased Salt Lake's population of non-Mormons with no religious adherence to Young or the church, as its kiss of death. The text block here is shockingly pristine for a 150-year-old schoolbook; A source in Salt Lake reports 10,000 copies were printed for the University of Deseret, now known as the University of Utah. "During a building renovation at the University in the 1980s, boxes were found and distributed" to VIP visitors. (Ivins, pg. 234, Flake 608.) 116 pp.…

First Salt Lake City edition of the Book of Mormon, the scripture Joseph Smith first published in 1830 as a record of the ancient peoples of the Americas, which became the founding text of the Latter-day Saints and one of the most widely distributed books ever printed. Brigham Youngâs own copy of this rare edition of the Book of Mormon, the first printed in Salt Lake City, signed by him and presented to Major Anson Mills of the United States Army, who recounted receiving it from Young in his autobiography. Duodecimo, bound in full contemporary brown pebble-grain morocco with titles and ruling to the spine, all edges gilt, brown endpapers. Boldly signed âBrigham Youngâ on the second free endpaper. Ownership plate of Major Anson Mills to the front pastedown. Housed in a custom full morocco clamshell box made by the Harcourt Bindery. An exceptional survival of the 1871 edition. Brigham Young (1801-1877) succeeded Joseph Smith as the leader of the Latter-day Saints, led the great migration west to the Salt Lake Valley, and served as the second president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1847 until his death. He founded Salt Lake City, served as the first governor of the Utah Territory, and led the founding of the institutions that became the University of Utah and Brigham Young University. The bookâs former owner, Major Anson Mills, served in the Union Army during the Civil War and continued in service through a long series of frontier campaigns until his retirement in 1897. In the aftermath of the war, Mills found himself stationed at Fort Bridger in Utah, where he became connected with Young, then both the head of the church and the governor of the territory. His printed bookplate, âProperty of Major Anson Mills, U.S. Army, Fort Davis, Texas, 1882,â is mounted to the front pastedown. Recounting his first meeting with Young in his 1918 autobiography, Mills wrote, âHe looked like General Grant, and was an earnest and, I believe, a sincere and conscientious man. He said he was glad to meet a regular officer, because the regular army always treated them well, but that the volunteers under Connor had been demoralizing to those of the Mormon faith. Discussing my prejudice against his people, about which he asked and I answered frankly, he said, âYou have doubtless heard we are disloyal to the Union.â Pointing to the flag flying over his Tabernacle, he said it had waved every day since the war began.â Young invited Mills to accompany his son-in-law to that weekâs sermon, and Mills obliged. He wrote specifically of receiving the present copy from Young on that occasion, seeing âopen on the pulpit the inspired volumes from which they preached,â the Old Testament, the New Testament, and the Book of Mormon. âHe presented a copy of the latter to me, inscribed with his name, which I still have.â The meeting left a lasting impression. âMy experiences changed my mind regarding the Mormon people,â Mills wrote. âI believe their church the equal of any in the inculcation of those qualities which make the Mormons law-abiding, industrious, economical and faithful to all their agreements.â In very good condition with rubbing, toning, the upper hinge cracked but holding, and occasional underlining in pencil. An exceptionally rare copy, linking the leader of the Latter-day Saints to an officer of the frontier army. The Book of Mormon (1830) is the foundational scripture of the Latter Day Saint movement. Joseph Smith Jr. (1805-1844) related that in 1823 an angel named Moroni led him to a set of golden plates buried in a hill near his familyâs farm in Manchester, New York, which he received in 1827 and translated, by his account, by the gift and power of God. First published in Palmyra, New York, in March 1830 in an edition of five thousand copies, financed by the farmer Martin Harris, who mortgaged his land to pay the printer, the book presents itself as the record of ancient peoples of the Americas. It tells of a family led by the prophet Lehi who fled Jerusalem around 600 B.C. and sailed to the New World, where their descendants divided into the rival Nephites and Lamanites, and it reaches its climax in the visit of the resurrected Jesus Christ to the Americas. The record was abridged, according to the text, by the prophet Mormon and completed and buried by his son Moroni, and it also contains the Book of Ether, the history of the Jaredites, who came to the Americas after the confusion of tongues at the Tower of Babel. Published with the testimonies of the Three Witnesses and the Eight Witnesses, who affirmed that they had seen the plates, the book appeared just days before Smith organized the Church of Christ, later The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, on April 6, 1830. After Smithâs murder at Carthage, Illinois, in 1844, Brigham Young led the Saints west to the Salt Lake Valley, where the church would in time issue its own editions of the book. One of the most widely distributed books in history, the Book of Mormon has since been translated into more than a hundred languages.…
