Quarter-Leather. Condition: Good. First Edition. Seven plays bound together. The Maid of the Mill, a Comic Opera by John Fletcher and William Rowley. This edition was published by J. Newbery; R Baldwin; T.Caslon; W. Griffin; W. Nicoll; T.Lownds; and T. Becket in 1768. Originally published in 1647 (75pp). The Lyar has no credited author or publication details (68pp). Robin Hood; of, Sherwood Forest: A Comic Opera by Leonard MacNally, esq. A New edition published by J. Almon in 1787. Previously published in 1784 (62pp). Nina or the Madness of Love, A Comedy , in Two Acts, Translated from the French, (As published by Mr. Le Texier.) By the Author of Maria, or The Gentle Rustic published by C. Elliot, T. Kay and Co. in 1787 (38pp). The author of the French edition was Benoît-Joseph Marsollier des Vivetières. No credited translator for this two act version. There was also a one-act version was called Nina; or, the Love Distracted Maid. The Artifice: A Comic Opera. in Two Acts. by William Augustus Miles published by T. Cadell in 1780 (54pp). The First Floor; A Farce in Two Acts by James Cobb published by C. Dilly in 1787 (54pp). The Prisoner at Large: A Comedy in Two Acts by John O'Keefe published by G.G.J. and J. Robinson in 1778 (. Bound in contemporary quarter leather with marbled boards. The spine has some chipping at the top and bottom, the title panel is lost and there is a little cracking along the edge next to the front panel but the binding is secure. Rubbing to the corners with some staining to the top corners and some surface and edge wear. Browning with a little spotting to the page edges. Browning to the endpapers with the name of a previous owner in ink to the title page - Lady Wale of Shelford near Cambridge. She has listed the contents on the front free endpaper and a family bookplate is on the front pastedown. Staining to the top corners of the first few pages of the first play and quite heavy spotting to a few pages near the back of this play. The Lyar has some spotting at the front. Robin Hood has several tears to the title page with two repairs using small strips of paper and there are similar repairs to the final page. The Artifice has some staining at the front and back and small sections of text have been crossed out in ink in four places. There are some spots and marks to the pages which have some browning and there are a few edge tears but the pages are otherwise generally unmarked. The plays are presumed to be first editions unless noted otherwise.
