Il n'a pas voyagé à l'intérieur de la Chine, mais a résidé "quelques mois à Canton, dans un temps où il était libre aux Européens de sortir de la ville" et a alors conçu "une grande estime pour l'un des plus anciens peuples du globe". Il présente dans une seconde partie ses observations sur les ouvrages des ambassadeurs anglais et hollandais Macartney et Van Braam qui "n'ont pas pris, sur les arts et sur la législation de Chinois, les renseignemens que les circonstances les mettoient à portée d'obtenir". Emery avait donc du s'associer à lui l'année républicaine suivant la parution pour la vente des exemplaires restants pour une raison qui nous est inconnue. Illustrée d'une carte dépliante du bras occidental du Gange, cet ensemble de récits de voyage et notes sur l'Asie fut rassemblés par Joseph-François Charpentier de Cossigny (1736-1809), explorateur-botaniste. Correspondant de l'Académie des Sciences de l'Île Maurice, il prit en charge la création de plusieurs jardins d'acclimatation et introduisit le litchi dans les Îles de France (Maurice) et Bourbon (La Réunion). L'ouvrage est riche de réflexions sur l'agriculture ; il comprend ainsi un essai sur la culture du riz en Asie, dont l'auteur avance qu'elle pourrait inspirer de nouveaux procédés applicables à la culture du blé. On découvre également d'intéressantes lettres concernant la possibilité d'introduire en Europe différentes espèces d'arbres et de fruits ainsi que des instructions sur la préparation de la cannelle. Si les considérations sur la culture et le « caractère national » du Japon ou de l'Inde n'en sont pas moins intrigantes, elles sont imprégnées d'impérialisme et révèlent un mépris profond de la part des auteurs pour l'autre « primitif ». Les autres nations européennes, cependant, ne sont pas en reste : dans la première partie de l'ouvrage, le récit annoté d'un voyage au Bengale de trois mois réalisé en 1789 par un ami de Charpentier de Cossigny, l'auteur s'indigne de la domination de la Compagnie des Indes orientales sur la région ; il met en exergue les faiblesses de son gouvernement et suggère à la France des moyens de la renverser. L'ouvrage comprend également des notes (corrections et ajouts) sur le récit de voyage de John Splinter Stavorinus, Voyages to the East Indies. Provenance : "Jules Joyet", mention manuscrite sur la première garde, non-identifié. "BIBLIOTHEQUE / DE V PERDONNET", supra-libris et étiquette sur le contreplat supérieur. Alexandre François Vincent Perdonnet (Vevey, 1768 - Lausanne, 1850), riche agent de change suisse qui compta dans la vie politique de son pays tout en déployant une activité économique intense en France (il possède par exemple les forges de la Loue et le haut fourneau de Pontarlier) et en Europe. Il est naturalisé français en 1818. De religion protestante, Vincent Perdonnet s'intéresse vivement aux sciences et aux arts, aux progrès industriels de son temps, et à toutes les nouveautés.
