"The Battle of Bladensburt, " in 1963; "Bloody Shiloh, " in 1964; "Hannibal, 249-183 B.C., " in 1965, and "A Soldier's War, " about the First Division in World War I, in 1966. Gen. Patch had been a member of the First Division. Born in Ft. Huachuca, Ariz., the son of an Army officer, Gen. Patch entered the Army in 1911 as a second lieutenant and was sent to this area and the Rio Grande Valley during the Pancho Villa raids, serving under Gen. John J. Pershing. In 1917, he went overseas with the first Army troops, which became part of the First Division. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for heroism at Soissons in 1918, and received the Purple Heart for wounds suffered in the battle.
