This is the First Stand-Alone, Hardcover Edition of the book, "The Lyman Letters : New Light on Emily Dickinson and Her Family" by Professor Richard B. Sewall. It was published in 1965 by the University of Massachusetts Press, thus reprinting the article…originally published in the August 1965 issue of 'The Massachusetts Review' From the book's dust-jacket: "THE LYMAN LETTERS tell for the first time the story of the thirty-year friendship of Joseph Bardwell Lyman with the Dickinson family, especially with Emily and her sister Lavinia, whom at one time Lyman intended to marry. They throw light on many a biographical crux, including Emily's attitude toward her father and sister, her first reading of the Bible and her first sense of the power of words, and her much-discussed, enigmatic ". terror since September. Lyman lived with the family for a time in the 1840s and corresponded with them for many years after his departure from New England in 1851. Most of his references to them, however, appear in his correspondence with with others, mainly in his letters between the years 1856 - 1858, to his fiancée, Laura Baker. These letters are an important witness to life in the Dickinson home, and especially to the character and qualities of the two sisters. Nine letters from Emily, two from Lavinia, and one from Austin appear here, in whole or in part, for the first time. Lyman, in his correspondence with others, transcribed 'Snatches' of Emily's letters. These are now added to the Dickinson canon."
