From the opening paragraph, "Purposing to aid the Cuban Telegraph…Company, our government considered it advisable to make a reconnaissance of the great range of keys upon the Florida reef." This is the author's first-hand experience in Knight's Key and Key Vaccas, Plantation Key, Metacomba Key, Key Largo and Indian Key, Virgina Key and Cape Florida, Key Bisquine, or Biscayne, Tampa Bay and Key West, and many other places along the coast including the Fort Jefferson / Dry Tortugas area. This account does not appear to have been published elsewhere. PLEASE NOTE, the present author's nephew, Charles Frederick Holder, one-time curator of the American Museum of Natural History, author in his own right, including a biography of Charles Darwin, and the title, Elements of Zoology, which he co-authored with the present author J. B. Holder, wrote a juvenile in 1892 also titled Along The Florida Reef. It was published by D. Appleton, New York, and is unrelated to the present title. Illustrations in the present item include a Mangrove swamp, a cigar shaped Mangrove, turtle turning, a "Conch," the white Egret, a pineapple clearing on Key Largo, a view of Indian Key, Captain Cole, a view of coralline, shark - fishing, Fort Jefferson, Bay Buisquine, the mouth of the Miami River, an arrow-root, a sisal hemp plant, an everglade, white pelicans, royal palms, the live-oak, a manatee, a brown pelican and sea gull, a sea-devil, Sea-Horse Key, a Cracker, a scene of sponge fishing, the Kerosene Brothers, a coral worm, the Malthea and Lophius, or Bellows-fish, the Physalia, a tentacle of the Physalia, examples of Cup coral and Brain coral, Janthina, Cymopolia, a Sea-Anemone on the back of a crab, Surgeon-fish, Aplysia, Octopus or Squid, Diogenes the hermit crab, Chemadoris, tropical sea-week, Pavonia, Gaulerpas growing on the sea bottom, Perry's look-out at Gibraltar Island, Put-in-Bay key, and numerous others of general interest. Brown cloth cpver has black and gold decoration that is clear and bright, some rubbing and scratches. The edges are rubbed, the corners are bumped and slightly f…rayed. Page edge gilding is clean and bright with some minor marks and scratches. Spine and binding are slightly shaken but intact, may have been repaired. Endpapers are a white textured satin paper with smudges and minor soiling. Many pages have some soiling and finger smudges at the edges, text and images are still clear. Tip-in illustrations are clean and bright. There are several differences between the color illustration list and the tip-ins that are present. The Bull-Frog illustration of the frontispiece is listed as being page 54, there is an African Cobra illustration between pages 148 and 149 that is not listed, and the illustrations of the Crab-Spider and the Holothurians are missing.
