Er besuchte das Realgymnasium und die handelsakademie, unternahm ausgedehnte Reisen durch Mitteleuropa, Italien, Spanien und Nordafrika und war viele Jahre lang Sekretär des Mánes, einer Vereinigung bildender Künstler in Prag. Im Jahre 1925 begann er sich literarisch zu betätigen; er schrieb anfangs Gedichte und einige dramatische Werke. Eins seiner Hörspiele wurde verfilmt. Neben "Don Juan" sind seine bekanntesten Romane "Wo sich die Füchse gute Nacht sagen" und "Nach uns die Sintflut"; gut erhalten.
