Tato podivuhodna citanka byla vlastne vytvorena ceskymi studenty, veznenymi v sachsenhausenskem koncentracnim tabore, kteri v tomto nehostinnem a krutem prostredi casto vzpominali na oblibene verse. Podle sve nejlepsi pameti davali dohromady sloku ke slo…ce a tajne tyto basne zaznamenavali vetsinou na papirky, urcene k baleni cigaret. V one pochmurne dobe, plne ponizeni, se tak poezie nahle stala urcitym povznasejicim symbolem, ktery alespon na okamzik dovolil zapomenout na tezkou skutecnost a pomahal ji prekonavat. Je pochopitelne, ze v onom case neexistovaly moznosti na dusledne redigovani tohoto sborniku. Vzhledem k tomu, ze zakladnim kriteriem vsak byla sila i moudrost psaneho slova, na usporadani prilis nezalezelo. A tak nevadilo, ze se vedle sebe ocitla napriklad cinska lidova poezie s Nezvalem, Ovidius s Gellnerem nebo Wolker s Rimbaudem.
