These powerful animal passions are linked to the process of the superior male assuming domination of the group and prime breeding rights with most of the females, and also with the act of reproduction which ensures a large number of offspring. The gratification of these passions was essential to the survival and improvement of the human species in its early stages of development, but they are an obstacle to the implementation of democracy and thus human progress. How did the virtues which are an essential part of democracy develop when they are in opposition to these much more powerful human desires?
