New condition color illustrated softcover wraps. Includes Dedication; Introduction; Summary and Endnotes. Signed by the author with black pen at the lower right corner of the title page. "Democracy has been a rare and fleeting occurrence in human history. This is because the virtues that are required of most of the citizens in a democracy - a desire for equality, a willingness to assume responsibility for the planning of one's life, and a belief that the rights of others are equal to one's own rights - are antithetical to the more powerful passions residing in the animal nature of the human species. These powerful animal passions are linked to the process of the superior male assuming domination of the group and prime breeding rights with most of the females, and also with the act of reproduction which ensures a large number of offspring. The gratification of these passions was essential to the survival and improvement of the human species in its early stages of development, but they are an obstacle to the implementation of democracy and thus human progress. How did the virtues which are an essential part of democracy develop when they are in opposition to these much more powerful human desires? For America, it was through the acceptance of a moral code that was guided by the belief that humans have a destiny not to ravage their fellow human being, but rather, to feel and to promote the awareness of the dignity and worth of each person. In America, this moral code is collapsing; the passions of the animal nature are overtaking society and with that the foundations of democracy are crumbling. In this book, the author offers suggestions that have as their objective the reversal of this slide towards a non-democratic, probably despotic, nation." - from the rear outer cover. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Although the author has a science background, an M.S. in organic chemistry and a minor in mathematics, she has been a life-long reader and student of history and philosophy. She was motivated to write this book because she is extremely concerned that the changes occurring in American society will prevent future generations, in particular the women of the futre, from having the opportunities and freedoms that she has enjoyed. Store description
Vero Beach Books is an antiquarian bookseller with a constantly updated inventory of rare out-of-print books, signed books, children's books, plus a large inventory of ephemeral items such as major U.S. city newspapers going back 100 years and more, golden and silver age fine condition comic books (soon to be added), and many other ephemeral items as well as much more recent popular volumes. We have been in business for 25 years, originally known as Emerson Books (named after one of our owner's favorite authors, to wit, Ralph Waldo Emerson) located back then in Westport, Connecticut. That said, we are here to serve you, to offer you fine quality items that are conservatively described so that you will always be pleasantly surprised and delighted with your purchase. Twenty-five years in the bookselling business has borne out our stellar service oriented reputation; the only difference is that now we are located in the almost always sunny and warm climate of Vero Beach, Florida. Again, we are here to serve you and, as was the case when we were previously known on ABEBooks.com as Emerson Books, we will continue to offer our very popular 100% free search service for those hard to find books rare and out of print books. Oftentimes we are also able to obtain these rare finds at very good discounts to our customers' so it is always worth contacting us in such cases!
