The contract states that Marcellus Jordan of Gilford [sic] County binds himself and his heirs "to carry the mail of the United States for John Stoops, the present contractor on Route No. 5158 from Greensborough by Monticello, Thompsonville, Lenox Castle, and Locust Hill to Yanceyville and…back three times a week." This Jordan agreed to do for the sum of $550 annually from 1 July 1859 to 30 June 1863; the document is signed by Jordan, Stoops, and the Greensboro Postmaster B. B. Graham. Although the contract stipulates the responsibilities of both parties, it does not describe how those responsibilities would be carried out in the event of war. Docketed on the verso, very good. Folded. (10333).
