Door middel van muziekinstrumenten of verbeelde muziekbeoefening werd bijvoorbeeld het ideaal van harmonie in men…selijke betrekkingen uitgedrukt, in het bijzonder in huwelijks- en familieportretten en in huwelijksallegorie?n. Instrumenten en hun bespelers konden ook gestalte geven aan het vermogen van muziek om zwaarmoedigheid te verdrijven, maar tevens zinspelen op het zintuig 'gehoor', op erotiek en seksualiteit en tenslotte op 'vergankelijkheid'. In deze publicatie beschrijft Eddy de Jongh de fascinerende geschiedenis van de betekenissen van muziek in de Nederlandse schilder- en prentkunst tussen omstreeks 1500 en 1700.
