Hardcover, fair, no dustjacket. Corners bumped with cardboard exposed there, soil and drop marks on cloth, approximately 1/8th inch fraying at head and foot of spine, light tan stain on textblock and endpapers, previous owner's inscription and signature with a well done color drawing of a flowering plant below, shaken, a few drop marks, but overall still a decent reading copy. Hardcover. Condition: Good. Assumed First. The cover of this Jones' book is exceptionally well preserved. It is done in black cloth with silver title and decorative design. The paper is browning and slightly brittle, but readable perusable. This publisher used a quality of paper in some instances that was more prone to age. The pages in the book containing illustrations are done on a much better quality paper. The frontispiece with artist's drawing is weak at the hinge, but the signature is tight. Detached front cover soiled and stained with large chips to top corners and slender chips at bottom corners; jagged 1.5cm paper loss at spine head with 3.25cm loss at heel and further slender loss along rear joint; missing rear cover with concluding page 189/verso detached. Toning to edges and at interior margins; scattered stains to interior pages as well. OCLC cites full pagination as 189 so book is complete. Verso of page 189 is advertisement for another book published by J.S. Ogilvie & Company. Binding staples remain firm. A poor but textually complete copy. Methodist evangelist Samuel Porter Jones (1847-1906) earned renown for his humor and story-telling and is credited as a primary influence on Will Rogers. Samuel White Small (1851-1931) was also a Methodist evangelist and prohibitionist. Also included is a four page pamphlet THE LAST SERMON PREACHED BY "SAM" JONES. Los Angeles, CA: Free Tract Society, Inc. [no date]. H 12.75cm x L 8.75cm. Sheets toned with a few nicks at edges.
