A clean copy of the First Edition of Samuel Johnson's tract on the Corn Laws written in 1766 for the use of his friend William Gerard Hamilton - an important politician of the period who achieved a brilliant reputation as an orator - despite his nickname of 'Single… Speech Hamilton' The volume was edited by Malone, who found the tract among Hamilton's papers and contributed a long preface. 8vo., xlvi, 253, [1]p colophon.; Stipple engraved frontispiece portrait. Previous owner's bookplate on inside front cover, edgewear/rubbing to calf along gilt ruled border on covers, spine with gilt decoration, red morroco label on spine. Collection of 5 romances, sketches, short stories, & biographies: Volume 11 of a handsome series titled 'British Novelist.' Authors include Samuel Johnson (with a Frontispiece portrait engraving of Johnson;) Madame Cottin; Mrs. Sherida; Col.…David Crockett (Sketches and Eccentricities;) and Horace Walpole (A Gothic Story.) The individual pieces were first published by Limbird between 1824-1835 in a weekly gazette. "Embellished with numerous engravings on wood:" b/w engravings in the romantic style of the period illustrate the text, with seven being hand-coloured by an enthusiastic reader. Original publisher's binding in half dark brown polished calf with banded and gilt spine; contrasting red labels; marbled sides and endpapers. /John Limbird (b.1796) was an English stationer, bookseller and publisher. From 1822 to 1847 Limbird published a twopenny weekly, The Mirror of Literature, Amusement, and Instruction. Late in 1847 it became the Mirror Monthly Magazine; and from 1849 to 1850 appeared finally as the London Review. Sound. Clean, very good. Slight rubbing of covers. Front board slightly loose at inner hinge.
