He was a two-time Guggenheim Fellowship recipie…nt and he chaired the Emory history department in the early 1970's. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War I and worked for the U.S. Army Intelligence Service at the Pentagon during the Korean Conflict. He received a Bachelor's degree at Swarthmore College and a Master's degree at the University of Iowa. In 1938, he received a doctor of philosophy degree from Oxford University, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar.
