First English edition. Fine and large paper issue. xv, [1], 143pp, [17]. With a half-title. Parallel Icelandic and English text. Finely bound in nineteenth-century burgundy straight-grain half-morocco, tooled in gilt and blind, black paper boards. Lightly rubbed, corners a little bumped, occasional spotting and marking to text, else fine. Early ink ownership inscription to head of title. An imposing large-paper copy of the first English translation, executed by Scandinavian antiquary and sometime chaplain to the British envoy- extraordinary in Denmark Rev. James Johnstone (d.1799), of Norwegian account of King Hakon Hakonarson's attempt to reassert his control of the Hebrides and the Isle of Man. Following the efforts of the successive Scottish kings Alexander II and III to unite the islands with the Scottish mainland, Hakon responded by sending a substantial fleet to the Western seaboard of Scotland. Following deliberate delays at the behest of the Alexander III, storms drove several Norwegian ships aground on the Ayrshire coastline, resulting in the indecisive battle of Largs in early October 1263. The invader's retreat, consequent failure to assert their military strength, the resulting Treaty of Perth saw Norway cede control of the islands to Scotland, once and for all. This 'fine and large paper' issue, with the dedication leaf to Archibald Macdonald referencing the work as a 'fragment of ancient Scottish history, containing several anecdotes of his ancestors the Lords of the Hebrides' is rare: ESTC records copies at just four locations in the British Isles (BL, Leeds, NLI, and Oxford); and a further three in North America (Emory, Illinois, and Trinity College). ESTC T154859. Size: 8vo.
