Johnson, the author of "Emily Dickinson: An Interpretive Biography", & editor of Emily Dickinson's letters, assembled a reading text for this edition, containing all of her 1,775 poems. "The Complete Poems of Emily Dickinson" allows the reader to see as a whole the work of an extraordinary poetic genius, the complexity of her personality, the fluctuation of her mood, & the development of her style. A searing strength of language & an economy of words which recalls Oriental literature overshadow the vivid but gentle lyricism of most of her anthologized work. Emily Dickinson was sometimes mild but often bitter; sometimes unworldly & at other times resentful of her lack of recognition; sometimes fragile but occasionally sharply critical of superficial gentility. She was a person & poet of scope & diversity, but has seldom been represented as such to the general public. Incredibly, she combines an almost negligible worldly experience w/ an intense understanding of life & human feelings. Writing apart from the mainstream of 19th century poetry, she created a poetic language of her own, transforming the domestic into the poetic, creating an entire world form the microcosm of a leaf, a blade of grass or a single metaphor. It was her originality which kept her work in obscurity during her lifetime. Its unconventional metric & rhymes caused Thomas Higginson, a man of letters to whom she sent four of her poems in 1862, to doubt that she was writing poetry at all & to recommend that she delay publication. Even in 1890, when Colonel Higginson first prepared her poems for the printer, he still considered them so unorthodox that he smoothed rhymes, regularized meter, & substituted "sensible" metaphors.
