Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 3rd Edition. An interesting text on the subject of Logic, this handsome Glasgow University prize volume was awarded in 1891 under the authority of John Veitch, Professor of Logic and Rhetoric in the University of Glasgow. The presentation label is completed in manuscript for Charles W. Thomson, for the Class of Logic and Rhetoric, and is attested "J Veitch Prof." in his own hand. Bound in an attractive contemporary full calf prize binding by Maclehose of Glasgow. Inside the book is a loose newspaper cutting from 1894 on the occasion of Professor Veitch's death, discussing his many achievements, and his involvement in this particular title. One of a remarkable group of Glasgow University prize volumes awarded between 1889 and 1895 to Charles William Thomson (1871-.), a notably distinguished student who won fifteen University prizes and graduated M.A. Thomson subsequently pursued a prominent career in Scottish education, serving as Rector of several schools including Larkhall Academy, and was also an author and advocate of Scottish national interests. A founding member and later President of the Scottish Patriotic Association, he is best remembered for his substantial two-volume historical work Scotland's Work and Worth (1909-10). His identity and academic record have been confirmed from the matriculation, prize and General Council records held by the University of Glasgow Archives & Special Collections. Lectures on Logic, by Sir William Hamilton, Bart. Edited by the Rev. H.L. Mansel, B.D., LL.D., Waynflete Professor of Moral and Metaphysical Philosophy, Oxford, and John Veitch, M.A., LL.D., Professor of Logic and Rhetoric in the University of Glasgow.  In Two Volumes, complete. Published by William Blackwood and Sons, Edinburgh and London. Third edition, revised, 1874. A pair of very good full calf leather hardbacks with gilt Glasgow University roundel to front and top compartment of spine. With gilt and blind stamped borders to covers and elaborate gilt tooling to spine. Raised bands and gilt black and burgundy morocco title labels. Some scuffing to leather and light wear to spine, but all soundly bound. A few surface scrapes to the leather. With marbled endpapers and matching marbled text block edges. A University prize presentation label to the front pastedown records the award to Charles W. Thomson in the Logic and Rhetoric class in 1890-91, and is signed "J Veitch Prof.", in his capacity as Professor of Logic and Rhetoric at the University, but also a nice association copy in that he edited the work in question. The text is bright and clear throughout. Just some spotting to endpapers and the first and last few leaves. A most attractive set. Text in English. Vol. I: xiv + 468pp;  Vol II: x + 521pp (including Appendix and Index).  Dimensions: each volume approximately 221mm high x 151mm wide x 35mm deep. Weight: Approximately 1816g (the set - unpacked). Signed by Author(s).…

Unbound. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. Typed Note Signed. One small quarto sheet of Charles Scribner's Sons (London) stationery. Three horizontal and two vertical creases for mailing, two easily erasable later penciled notes, else about fine. A rather terse note from legendary bibliophile John Carter, signed in type Charles Scribner's Sons and initialed "J.W.C." in manuscript, to Messrs. Campbell & Don-Wauchope of Edinburgh. The six-line note, regarding James Young Simpson's book *The Garment Of The Living God: Studies in the Relations of Science and Religion*, says (in much more polite terms) "there is nothing to be done at present, like we wrote you a week ago." Carter was an author, diplomat, bibliographer, book collector, and bookseller. He wrote, among much else, the oft-consulted *ABC for Book Collectors*, now in its ninth edition. Signed.…

Two APCSs, sl. worn, but text clear and complete. The subject of both cards is the William Beckford letters which "disappeared" during an auction of the contents of The Mere, the Bentley house near Slough. First postcard (to Hyde): "My old friend Mrs Bentley has asked me to look into the question of other letters & papers, including the William Beckford lot w[hi]ch she tells me you saw; and I have had a talk today with her lawyer. I should much like to know just what you saw & heard. Could you possibly telephone me tomorrow morning or Sunday? Flaxman 4344 (reverse charges of course)." Second postcard (to Mrs Bentley): "I spent all day yesterday wading & probing at Hetheringtons, & I am afraid the Beckford are not there. I am glad to have your letter with the full details. I will talk to Rivington on Monday & we will then report to you." Note: John Carter further pursued these letters in the pages of the TLS, telling whoever removed them from The Mere should know that he is on the lookout for them on the market. Ron Hyde was present at the House Sale because his wife was daughter to Mrs Bentley's housekeeper. He told me who he saw concealing the Beckford letters behind their back (having done some surreptitious digging in the house as dealers do!) while asking Mrs Bentley if a minor lot would be worth a fiver to her. I believe Carter eventually brokered a deal between the light-fingered bookseller and a major American institution.…

The six items in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. ONE: Typed Letter Signed to Carter, in English, from Miss Dr. D. van Velden, curator. On letterhead of the Rijksmuseum Meermanno-Westreenianum. 22 March 1966. 1p., 12mo. Giving details of the opening hours. TWO: Typed Letter Signed to Carter from E. A. Lowe. On letterhead of the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, New Jersey. 25 January 1969. 'If there are any new developments re Stanley Morison, I hope you will keep me posted. Some one sent me Brooke Crutchley's Two Men. There was no card so I do not know to whom I am indebted. [.] Do you recall our dinner at the Garrick Club when I astonished you and Morison by ordering steak tartare. What a delightful occasion! I cannot tell you how I miss S. M.' THREE: Copy of Carter's typed reply to Item Two. 1p., 4to. 3 February 1969. The second paragraph begins: 'The Morisonians are at work.' and notes activities by Nicolas Barker, Brooke Crutchley, S. H. Steinberg ('who died last week to our great loss') and James Moran. 'Last night there was an excellent BBC programme organised by Douglas Cleverdon and Nicolas Barker, which included some superb recordings of Morison's own voice. I believe a transcript of this is being prepared for those specially interested and if so I will get a copy for you.' He ends in the hope that Lowe will be able to visit England in May. 'Fredson Bowers is coming to collect his medal and we shall lay on some suitable ceremony - a dinner if I have my way - for him and Graham Pollard; to which your presence would add an immense eclat, besides giving much pleasure to your friends.' FOUR: Autograph Letter Signed to Carter from James Moran. On his letterhead, 13 Chesterford Gardens, London. 1p., 4to. He writes, as a Governor of St Bride's, to ask if Carter 'would be prepared to allow your name to be added to an appeal to establish a Beatrice Warde Memorial Lecture Fund. We are asking some thirty distinguished people on both sides of the Atlantic to sign the appeal'. He is enclosing a draft (Item Five). FIVE: Duplicated Typed circular enclosed with Item Four, headed 'Beatrice Warde Memorial Lecture Fund Appeal'. 1p., 8vo. Moran has written 'Draft' at the head of the head. SIX: Copy of Typed Letter from Nicolas Barker to H. R. B. Hamilton of Messrs Crane & Hawkins, London. 6 May 1971. 2pp., 8vo. Headed 'MRS. B. L. B. WARDE DEC'D'. The letter begins: 'As agreed on the telephone, I am writing to make a proposal to you about the future of that part of the papers and possessions of Mrs. Warde that were deposited with me, as suggested by the memorandum drawn up by Mr. Jones and Miss Clutton of the Monotype Corporation (I enclose a copy). From this you will see that three items, numbers 4, 10 and 20 were put in my hands. The value assigned to them for a total off $250. I would like to offer to buy these papers from the Estate, so that they may be kept with the other main Morison archive, which is partly in my possession and partly in that of the Literary Executors of Morison's Estate and the Cambridge University Press. As I told you, it is my hope that the complete archive will be deposited in the Cambridge University Library. [.]' The letter continues with reference to the valuation. Barker has copied in Crutchley, Jones and Carter, the last of whom he proposes as a valuer at Sotheby's.…

Oblong 12mo, unpaginated. Original black stiff paper wrappers, lettered in pale blue to front panel. Paper stock of different colours. Small closed tear to head of flat spine, otherwise a near fine copy. First edition. CHARLES HANDLEY-READ'S COPY WITH HIS OWNERSHIP SIGNATURE TO FRONT FREE ENDPAPER. A collection of twenty-six clerihews, with blank pages bound in at the rear for the reader's own additions. On the page headed 'THE AUTHORS' the last line of text is missing, thereby omitting the name of the author of The Emperor Pertinax. Charles Handley-Read [1916-1971] was a writer on architecture and a collector in the field of Victorian decorative arts. He read architecture at St. Catherine's College, Cambridge, and would have been an undergraduate when he bought this volume (which was published in Cambridge) on 28 October 1938. A second edition was published in 1946 and surfaces occasionally, but the first, offered here, is extremely scarce -- especially with such a provenance. …
