In 1849, spurred by the gold rush, Manly set out along the Oregon Trail. On reaching Fort Bridger, he thought he could float down the Green and Colorado rivers to California. He did get to Arizona and then trekked across desert land, arriving in California.in 1850. These are sketches of his travels; lesser descriptions were collected in the Jayhawkers' Oath (949). In the course of his life, Manly was first a fur hunter and trader, a guide of Westward bound caravans, a seeker of gold, then a farmer and writer in his later years.
