Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the captivating realm where history and romance intertwine, exploring the lives of extraordinary individuals whose actions transcended the ordinary and ventured into the realm of legend. The author skillfully contrasts the grandeur and heroism of the chivalric age… with the more subdued and commonplace character of later times. Central to this exploration is the enigmatic figure of Charles Edward, a historical figure whose life was marked by daring adventures, mysterious undertakings, and years shrouded in secrecy. The narrative delves into his audacious attempt to reclaim the throne of Scotland, a venture fueled by the same spirit that propelled historical titans like Caesar and his namesake across the Rubicon. Despite its ultimate failure, the attempt is portrayed as a testament to unwavering chivalry and heroic resolve. Beyond the well-known events of his Scottish campaign, the book ventures into the lesser-known years of Charles Edward's life, unveiling a hidden tapestry of secret journeys, courtly negotiations, and fleeting appearances across Europe. These enigmatic episodes hint at a life of ceaseless activity and covert operations, leaving behind a trail of intrigue and unanswered questions. Through vivid storytelling and insightful observations, this book invites readers to contemplate the enduring legacy of Charles Edward and the profound impact of his life on the course of history. It sheds light on a figure who, though often relegated to the shadows of history, embodies the spirit of a bygone era and continues to captivate the imagination with his unwavering pursuit of a lost cause. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

The Allen brothers were born in Wales in the late 18th century. They were later to claim to be the grandsons of Bonnie Prince Charlie, Charles Edward Stuart, 1720-1788, and in the 1871 census claimed their birthplace as Versailles. The pseudonyms for the two brothers are ".extremely confusing, and there is conflicting information about [them] from all sources, including the venerable Dictionary of National Biography. To compound the issue, these same sources seem to repeatedly confuse the two brothers and their various names. What is agreed upon is that the brothers were enamored with the lore of Scotland, and invented an elaborate genealogical record, which changed and was added to throughout their lives." (Callahan). They are the authors of the notorious Vestiarium Scoticum, a book claiming to be based upon a 16th century manuscript on Scottish tartans that was soon revealed as a forgery. .

Leather. Condition: Very Good. A lovely copy of a very scarce early edition the Sobieski Stuart's unusual historical work, providing dubious evidence of their relationship to Scotland's Bonnie Prince Charlie. A very scarce early edition of this historical work from John Carter Allen and Charles Manning Allen, siblings and preten…ders to the Scottish throne, who adopted the Sobieski Stuart name in the late 1830s, claiming their descent Bonnie Prince Charlie.Illustrated with a lithographic frontispiece, and in a bright quarter morocco binding.First published in 1847, within the work the brothers detail three scenes in recent history which, taken together, suggest that their father was the child of Prince Charles Edward Stuart and Louise of Stolberg.
