Hardcover. Condition: Fine condition. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine dust jacket. NOT a library discard (illustrator). First Edition. Las Vegas, Nevada: Huntington Press, 2003. SIGNED directly on the front free endpaper by John L. Smith (his signature only, NOT personalized to anyone). Fine condition in a bright and shiny Fine dust jacket (only lightly rubbed). NO chips. NO tears. NO creases. NO fading. NOT price clipped ($25.95). [Bibliographical note: jackets priced "$26.95" are later]. Sharp corners. Pages are fresh, crisp, clean and unmarked -- apparently never read. Bound in the original black boards, stamped in bright gold on the spine. From the dust jacket: "For more than 35 years, Oscar Goodman was the country's pre-eminent defense attorney for alleged gangsters. His endless client list included Meyer Lansky, Nick Civella, Anthony Spilotro, Frank Rosenthal, Jimmy Chagra, Natale Richichi, Nicky Scarfo, and Vinny Ferrara, along with many others. Though no further connection between Goodman and the Mafia has ever been proved, the famous litigator has often been accused of being more than just a mouthpiece for organized crime. Was Oscar Goodman only what he claims, an attorney who defended his clients based on the simple principle that they, too, have constitutional rights? And if so, how did he manage to mingle with the mob for decades without becoming part of it? After scores of unlikely courtroom victories, Goodman pulled off an even more unlikely career change. Twice elected mayor of Las Vegas, he went from legal spokesman for the most notorious crime figures of our era to political spokesman for the most notorious city in the country.". Signed by John L. Smith (his signature only). First Edition. Hardcover. Fine condition/Fine dust jacket. Illus. by NOT a library discard. 8vo. xx, 420pp. + 16 pages of photos. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping.

Bibliography. Index. Bound in the original blue boards with a blue cloth spine stamped in bright gold. From the dust jacket: "Of all the modern Las Vegas casino operators, none had more flair than Bob Stupak. The self-proclaimed 'Polish Maverick' rose from humble origins as the son of a Pittsburgh boss gambler to head one of the largest privately owned casinos in Las Vegas, the infamous Vegas World. Stupak parlayed a small slot joint into a $100 million-a-year gambling operation by manipulating the local and national media with outrageous stunts and promotions. His headline-grabbing handiwork is now the stuff of Las Vegas legend. Remember Vegas World's VIP Vacation? Stupak's cleverly worded advertisements flooded millions of mailboxes around the country and appeared in dozens of prominent national periodicals, including Playboy, Parade, and USA Today, attracting hordes of tourists to his out-of-the-way casino. Though the VIP Vacation became the most successful promotional campaign in the history of Las Vegas, it was also the most controversial. It prompted sanctions and fines from casino-industry regulators, but not before generating enough seed money to fund early construction of the $550 million Stratosphere Tower, Hotel & Casino. Of all of Stupak's big ideas, the Stratosphere Tower was the biggest. It was to be the tower to end all towers, the greatest mousetrap in a city of great mousetraps. But the tallest observation tower in the country was erected on a wobbly financial foundation of oppressive interest rates and sky-high debt, which ultimately turned the no-lose proposition into one of Las Vegas' most high-profile flops." . Reno & Las Vegas: University of Nevada Press, 2019. INSCRIBED / SIGNED by the AUTHOR directly on the half title page. SIGNED copies are SCARCE. BRAND NEW in a BRAND NEW dust jacket. Near PERFECT CONDITION. The jacket has only a tiny bit of very mild shelfwear (like you sometimes find in any new book store). NO chips, creases, tears or fading. Sharp corners. Pages are fresh, crisp, clean and unmarked - obviously never read. Bound in the original green cloth, stamped in bright gold on the spine. From the dust jacket: "THE WESTSIDE SLUGGER is the powerful story of civil rights in Las Vegas and Nevada through the eyes and experience of Joe Neal, a history-making state lawmaker in Nevada. Neal rose from humble beginnings in Mound, Louisiana, during the Great Depression to become the first African American to serve in the Nevada State Senate. Filled with an intense desire for education, he joined the United States Air Force and later graduated from Southern University -- studying political science and the law at a time of great upheaval in the racial status quo. As part of a group of courageous men, Neal joined a Department of Justice effort to register the first black voters in Madison Parish. When Neal moved to southern Nevada in 1963 he found the Silver State to be every bit as discriminatory as his former Louisiana home. As Neal climbed through the political ranks, he used his position in the state senate to speak on behalf of the powerless for more than thirty years. He took on an array of powerful opponents ranging from the Clark County sheriff to the governor of the state, as well as Nevada's political kingmakers and casino titans. He didn't always succeed -- he lost two runs for governor -- but he never stopped fighting. His successes included improved rights for convicted felons and greater services for public education, mental health, and the state's libraries. He also played an integral role in improving hotel fire safety in the wake of the deadly MGM Grand fire and preserving the pristine waters of Lake Tahoe, which brought him national attention. Neal lived a life that personified what is right, just, and fair. Pushing through racial and civil rights hurdles and becoming a lifelong advocate for social justice, his dedication and determination are powerful reminders to always fight the good fight and never stop swinging.". INSCRIBED / SIGNED by the AUTHOR. First Printing of the First Edition. Hardcover. New condition/New dust jacket. Illus. by NOT a library discard. 8vo. xii, 273pp. + 10 pages of photos. Hardcover. Condition: Fine condition. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine dust jacket. NOT a library discard (illustrator). First Edition. Las Vegas, Nevada: Huntington Press, 2003. PHOTOS UPON REQUEST. A UNIQUE copy INSCRIBED/SIGNED directly on the front free endpaper by FOUR people: the AUTHOR, John L. Smith, the SUBJECT, Oscar Goodman, his wife Carol Goodman (who figures prominently in the book, and who succeed Oscar as Mayor of Las Vegas in 2011, and to whom, along with 3 other women, the BOOK is DEDICATED), and Oscar Goodman's Chief of Staff Stephanie Boixo (who later became Stephanie Goodman upon her marriage to Oscar's son Eric). The inscriptions are dated 9/30/03. The book was almost certainly signed at the book's release party at the Icehouse bistro in Las Vegas on that same day. Laid-in is Jon Ralston's long book review (filling more than a full page in the Las Vegas Sun, Oct 12, 2003). Fine condition in a bright and shiny Near Fine dust jacket. The jacket shows just a tiny bit of very mild surface rubbing, NO chips. NO tears. NO creases. NO fading. NOT price clipped ($25.95). [Bibliographical note: jackets priced $26.95" are later]. Sharp corners. Pages are crisp, clean and unmarked. INSCRIBED/SIGNED by the AUTHOR, SUBJECT, & 2 more. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine condition/Near Fine dust jacket. Illus. by NOT a library discard. 8vo. xx, 420pp. + 16 pages of photos. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. First edition thus. Rye House Plot bound with copies of the Informations and Original Papers Relating to Proof of the Horrid Conspiracy Against the Late King, His Present Majesty, and the Governmnt: as they were order'd to be published by His late Majesty.Signed by several principles including Robert Spencer 2nd Earl Sunderland, John Romzey, Nathan Toll [Towle], Thomas Brown Watson, M. Towlens[?], etc. Two parts bound as one. Folio 12" tall; 2 + 167 pages + 1 + 140 pages. There are many signatures scattered through this copy on pages relating to the principals involved, L. Jenkins, J. Ernle, R. Sawyer, H. Finch, as well as a one page handwritten genealogy of the Towle family beginning about 1745 with notes going to about 1834. The signatures are of the period, but cannot be authenticated. This is a later rebinding with gilt titles, decorations, and top edge, with the pages trimmed to a margin of about one inch all around, but the binding had begun to disintegrate. The hinges are broken with pieces of the backstrip missing. There is no title page for the first part, the text beginning with a dedication to James the Second. The second part includes the title page with date and publisher. The internal binding is secure. Paper quality ranges throughout from cream white to moderate yellowing with scattered foxing, with one page repaired long ago using a paper strip for reinforcing, but all could be rebound. This edition contains the repeated page numbers 63-64 (different text) and pages 105-06 omitted with no obvious textual loss. This is worthy of a fine rebinding and priced accordingly.

Cloth. Condition: Very Good ++. No Jacket. First Edition. 1st Edition 1871. Presentation inscription from the author to the title page. Bound in the original cloth with striking hand coloured plates. John Smith 1798-1888 was a British botanist who was the first curator at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (Kew Gardens), starting in 1841. He had first been employed at the gardens as a stove boy in 1822. Along with the directors, Sir William Jackson Hooker and Sir Joseph Hooker, he oversaw the conversion of the gardens from private royal gardens to public gardens when Queen Victoria converted them, possibly saving them from oblivion. He further prevented the gardens from catastrophic decline during the late 19th century when they were neglected in funding priorities. According to the Kew website, "It is significant that when stove-boy-Smith arrived at Kew, 40 species of fern were grown but when Curator Smith retired, there were 1,084."Book is very good with bright boards. Light edge rubbing in places. Contents good. Odd pages lightly foxed. Very uncommon signed. More images can be taken upon request. Ref18457. Signed by Author(s).
