Here, he has put together a timely reconstruction of the dramatic events of the final days of the Vietnam War. Tiziano Terzani (14 September 1938 - 28 July 2004) was an Italian journalist and writer, best known for his extensive knowledge of 20th century East Asia and for being one of the very few western reporters to witness both the fall of Saigon to the hands of the Viet Cong and the fall of Phnom Penh at the hands of the Khmer Rouge in the mid-1970s. In 1971 he moved to Singapore as a reporter, as the Asian correspondent for the German weekly Der Spiegel. He then offered his collaboration to the Italian daily newspapers Corriere della Sera and La Repubblica. On a semi-secret level, he sent regular information about East Asian politics to the Banca Commerciale Italiana, which was headed by Raffaele Mattioli. Terzani knew much about the historical and political background of Asia but had also a deep interest in the philosophical aspects of Asian culture. He lived for years at a time in Beijing, Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok and New Delhi. His stay in Beijing in the 1980s came to an end when he was arrested and expelled in 1984 from the country for "counter-revolutionary activities". Based on his experiences in China, he wrote La Porta Proibita (Behind The Forbidden Door). Tizano Terzani slipped back into Saigon on April 27, 1975, determined to witness the end of Vietnam's most tragic war. What he experienced over the next 94 days - the last-ditch attempts at negotiation, you panic American evacuation, the precipitous conquest of Saigon, the anxious waiting for a bloodbath that never came, the first signs of transformation and reconstruction - is the subject of this book, a first-hand account of the revolutionary process in Vietnam during and after the collapse of American power. Der Spiegel correspondent Terzani gives an eyewitness account of the April 1975 chaos as local officials and hangers-on tried to bribe their way out of a Saigon surrounded by revolutionary forces, the US sowed rumors of impending massacre, and all services collapsed. When the insurgent army took over--mostly country boys bemused by Saigon--families were reunited, Vier Cong came out of hiding or "cover," and the city's Playboy-rock culture gave way to concerts of Vietnamese and classical music. Terzani claims the new authorities relied on patient, gradual measures and local self-organization to administer a city rampant with emotion and short of necessary goods. He underlines the substitution of "reeducation" for forcible vengeance, even where high officials were concerned.
