Trade paperback. Condition: Good. James Stevens Curl and John Sambrook (illustrator). Later printing. The format is approximately 5 inches by 7.75 inches. xi, [3], 833, [1] pages. Illustrated front cover. Illustrations. Bibliography. This is one of the famed Oxford Paperback Reference series. The text is largely in a two column format. Sticker residue and scuffing on the back cover. James Stevens Curl, MRIA FSA FSA Scot FRIAS (26 March 1937 ? 5 November 2025) was a British architectural historian, architect and author with an extensive range of publications to his name. He was educated at Campbell College, Belfast, at Queen's University Belfast, and at Belfast College of Art before studying at the Oxford School of Architecture (now part of Oxford Brookes University) where he qualified in Architecture (1963) and ? having studied under Arthur Korn ? in Town Planning (1967). He read for his doctorate at University College London, which he received in 1981. Curl was Professor at the School of Architecture and Design, Ulster University and Professor Emeritus at De Montfort University, Leicester. An honorary Doctor of Arts degree was conferred on him by De Montfort University in 2014 in recognition of his "distinctive contribution to the study of Architectural History" and of his "outstanding contributions to the intellectual and cultural life of the nation and the region". John Sambrook spent nearly twenty years with the Greater London Council producing measured drawings for the Survey of London. He combined a career as a freeland illustrator with his principal occupation as a manufacturer of metal fanlight-windows. From Aalto to ziggurat, this new work offers an authoritative and accessible guide to architecture and its history. With over 5,000 entries--twice as many as its nearest competitor--it provides extensive coverage of all periods of Western architectural history, from ancient times to the present day, in styles ranging from Assyrian architecture to Flemish Mannerism. With entries spanning from the commonplace to the less well known, this dictionary aims to cover as wide a range of architectural terms as possible in an accessible style. Curl has included over 250 attractive illustrations, which add vital visual information to entries on topics such as the arch or the cross. There are also longer entries which explain the different schools of architecture--from Bauhaus to the Federal Style--and put them in their historical context. Biographical entries are provided for a great number of architects from the ancients to leading figures of today. From Brunelleschi and Gropius to Le Corbusier and Brunel, each entry outlines the architect's importance and gives examples of their most notable buildings. Comprehensive and up to date, this book will prove to be an indispensable guide to anyone interested in architecture and its history. It is ideal for students and professional architects, as well as general readers.
