Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This new paperback is a Revised Edition with new preface. When scholars of Middle Eastern and Islamic history consider Mecca or its region, the Hijaz, they tend to focus on either the first century of Islam, when the city and region became briefly the centre of an incipient empire, or the twentieth, when the city was the centre of the Arab Revolt. More than a thousand years of history in between are relatively unknown. The pre-modern imperial cities of Damascus, Baghdad, and Cairo quickly superseded Mecca as centres of politics and long-distance trade, leaving Islams premier holy city with its singular role as the destination of the great pilgrimage. Of course, the religious significance of Mecca attracted the attention of neighbouring rulers, such as the Mamluk sultans of Cairo, who claimed sovereignty over the city to enhance their reputations as paramount Muslim rulers in the later medieval period. Using sources composed by late medieval Meccan scholars alongside the more well-known Mamluk material, this study presents the history of late medieval Mecca and the Sharifs who ruled the city by examining their relations with local and global forces: their alliances with local groups in the Hijaz, their relations with the imperial centre of Mamluk Cairo, and their reliance on the maritime trade of the Indian Ocean. This new paperback is a Revised Edition with new preface. Using sources composed by late medieval Meccan scholars alongside the more well-known Mamluk material, this study presents the history of late medieval Mecca and the Sharifs who ruled the city. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the often misunderstood and misrepresented War of 1812, shedding light on the bravery and resourcefulness of American soldiers who fought against significant odds. The author challenges the prevailing narrative of the war, particularly the negative portrayal of American troops, arguing that their accomplishments have been unjustly overshadowed by misinformation and regional bias, especially from New England where opposition to the war was strong. The book explores the political landscape of the time, examining the factors that fueled opposition to the war, including partisan politics, economic concerns related to trade restrictions, and the growing tensions over slavery. The author also criticizes the shortcomings of the Madison administration and its impact on the war effort. Additionally, the book delves into the controversial Hartford Convention, a gathering of New England Federalists who opposed the war and contemplated secession. Through a meticulous examination of historical records and firsthand accounts, the author seeks to rectify the misconceptions surrounding the War of 1812 and to honor the sacrifices of those who fought for their nation's independence. Ultimately, this book serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of historical accuracy and the enduring legacy of the War of 1812 in shaping American identity and national pride. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. The nineteen articles gathered in this volume were presented at a conference on the cultural history of Mamluk Egypt and Syria, jointly sponsored by the Orient-Institut Beirut and the University of Balamand in May 2005. The authors of these studies break new ground, delving into diverse topics seldom examined in Mamluk studies, bringing new approaches to familiar subjects, and employing sources rarely used by historians of the Sultanate. The first part of the volume, the papers of which served, to a great extent, as the heart of the conference proceedings, examines interaction between the diverse religious communities of Syria and Egypt and the state establishment. The second part, divided into three sections, concerns production in the visual arts, the sciences, and literature, shedding new light on Mamluk society and on the variety of its artistic production and intellectual vitality. The third and last part of the volume deals with the cultural contexts of political practice and social interaction, including studies on the relations between the Mamluk elite and the indigenous population, state institutions, and gender relations. Together these studies offer fresh insight into the cultural diversity and unity of the Mamluk period. This volume, which includes articles in Arabic, French and English, will be a welcome addition to the libraries of historians of the Mamluk Sultanate, as well as a useful resource for scholars of the history of architecture, art, literature, religion, and science. Papers presented at a conference held at the University of Balamand, Lebanon, May 4-7, 2005. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

It delves into the events leading up to the invasion of the US capital, Washington DC, on August 24, 1814, exploring the disheartening experience and lack of preparedness that led to the humiliating defeat. The author analyzes the complexities of military unpreparedness, providing insights into the consequences of an inadequate defense system by delving into the battles and events that occurred during the War of 1812, a war that became a lesson in what happens when a nation fails to invest in its defense capabilities This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
