Published by Grosset & Dunlap, 1950
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. M. C. Weiler (illustrator). Octavo, gray textured cloth stamped in maroon, 184 pp., illustrated by M. C. Weiler. A mid-century G&D reissue compiling Foote's classic horse-racing and stableyard fiction, stories originally appearing between 1913 and 1923 in The Saturday Evening Post and other magazines. Contents include Shame on You, Blister, A Fowl Disaster, Two Ringers, Class, Salvation, Très Jolie, and Ole Man Sanford. Weiler's line drawings complement Foote's blend of humor, racing detail, and Americana. Book is in Very Good Condition. Clean and solid example with light wear to cloth edges; spine toned but fully legible; boards sharp and square. Endpapers show mild offsetting and waviness, likely from an old dust jacket or storage conditions, but are free of markings. Interior pages clean with only light age toning, illustrations crisp. No previous owner names. Binding tight. Grosset & Dunlap did not print explicit edition statements for most Famous Horse Stories volumes. The copyright page carries the 1950 copyright for this compilation, followed by the magazine-story copyrights from Appleton, Curtis, and Crowell. Absence of later G&D reprint codes, combined with the gray textured cloth and maroon horseshoe emblem, is consistent with the earliest G&D printing issued ca. 1950. (G&D later shifted to differently colored cloths and dust jackets.) Thus this copy is Grosset & Dunlap First Edition / First Printing of the G&D issue, not the first appearance of the stories, but the first collected edition under this title. This plain cloth Grosset & Dunlap binding appears to be one of the publisher's jacketless issues, produced for the budget/library market.
