Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. Hardback. First Edition. Slight shelf wear to edge of D/J. In this book Dr. Keevil continues the history begun in Hamey the Stranger, which showed how Baldwin Hamey, a Flemish plysician, after going to Russia as Court Doctor to the Czar Fedor, came to Eliza…bethn London to settle there for the rest of his life. The life of the younger Hamey is based on unusually intimate and previously unexamined manuscripts, which show how rapidly this Huguenot gamily was absorbed into Lodnon society. The letters and memoirs give a detailed account of Hamey's youth and of his medical education at Leiden, oxford and London: ththrough them can be seen his rise to eminence as a physician and his influence over the Royal College of Physicians, whose principal benefactor he became. (His correnspondence includes the only surviving letter of a professional nature by Dr. William Harvey, whom he called in consultation). Hamey, guided by his forceful French wife, successfully steered his way between the divided loyalties of Cromwellian England while secretly forming the collected of Stuart relics now at Windsor Castle. He lived to experience the Plague in London and to witness the Fire from his new home at Chelsea with whose history his closing years are closely identified. Illustrated. 230 pp. Plastic protective covering around D/J. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
