Howard Ruede's letters were collected by John Ise, while Ise was studying pioneer life in the late 1920s in Osborne County, Kansas. Ise used several different kinds of materials in assembling the collection. Part of what we have here consists of letters written by Ruede to friends and relatives back home in Pennsylvania. These letters, some of which were published in his hometown newspaper, were written during the first year of Ruede's homesteading efforts; in them he tried to explain the reality of pioneer life for others who were contemplating a move west. Ise also took materials from the Osborne County Farmer, a small newspaper for which Ruede set type and wrote. Ruede had expanded some of his original letters and notes and had published them in the Farmer. Ise then edited the letters, eliminating what he considered to be personal matters and combining materials from the Farmer with Ruede's letters to his friends and family in Pennsylvania. When Ise was preparing his own classic Sod and Stubble, published in 1936, a year before Sod-House Days came out, he drew on materials such as Ruede's interviews with Ise's mother and with people from Osborne County, as well as on articles in the Farmer. Ise's family had pioneered near what is now the town of Downs, Kansas, only a few miles from Howard Ruede's claim. Ise's book and Ruede's letters enrich one another touching on the same themes. This book is a moving account of life on the American frontier.
