Blue linen boards/VG w/short lesions to lower spine edge, and showing discoloration to spine & surface. No Jacket. Upper text edge dyed blue. Memoir of Wilfrid Noyce, team member of the 1953 9th British Expedition, lead by Sir John Hunt (Foreword), in which Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing scale Everest. This is the memoir of Wilfrid Noyce in scaling South Col which lies between Mount Everest and Lhotse, the first and fourth highest mountains in the world. It is a final stepping stone for climbers approaching Everest from the southeast ridge in Nepal. Wilfrid Noyce and the Sherpa Annullu were the first climbers on the expedition to reach the Col. Sir John Hunt recorded: "It was 2.40 p.m. Wilfrid Noyce and his companion Annullu stood at that moment above the South Col of Everest, at about 26,000 feet. .they were . looking upwards to the final pyramid of Everest itself. It was a great moment . shared by all of us who watched it. Their presence there was symbolic of our success in overcoming the most crucial problem of the whole climb; they had reached an objective which we had been striving to attain for twelve anxious days." Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, some slight yellowing to back jacket, not price clipped (£4.00), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy for its age. 172pp, illustrated. The story of the founding of the British Nepal Medical Trust. Dr John Cunningham served as a ship¿s doctor and then four and half years in hospital service. He and his wife Penny both shared a love of adventure and a desire to use their training where it was urgently needed. Nepal, they learned, had only 200 doctors for its eleven million people. They contacted the Director of Health Services in Kathmandu offering their services with a team of doctors and nurses which was promptly accepted. After he made a preliminary investigation in Nepal a team of colleagues was recruited and pharmaceutical and other companies approached for their support. In April 1968 the team of six doctors, four nurses and a young mechanic set off for Nepal in three Land Rovers to undertake the 8000 mile journey to Nepal. The Government of Nepal had asked them to set up their base at Biratnagar. In the first six months they had started the modernisation and improvement of the hospital. The work then extended into the hills and to remote areas of the country in a battle against tuberculosis. By 1972 72% of the 250,000 children under the age of 18 in the Kosi province, an area of 3000 square miles of difficult terrain, had been BCG vaccinated. Even after his return to the UK, while working as a GP, he continued his support for the work continuing in Nepal by acting as a Trustee and Chairman of BNMT until his death in 1990. An account of the German / Austrian attempt to climb Nanga Parbat at the western end of the Himalayas. Karl Maria Herrligkoffer (1916-91), was a German doctor and mopuntaineer. Between 1953 and 1986, Herrligkoffer organized and led numerous German and Austrian expeditions toclimb the highest peaks in the Himalayas and Karakoram. Herrligkoffer's leadship style was considered authoritarian and confrontational. Herrligkoffer's son Klaus found the portrayal of his father's personality in Joseph Vilsmaier's feature film 'Nanga Parbat' in 2010 to be an 'insult and denigration', which is why he publicly demanded an apology from the production company.…
