Hard Covers. Condition: Very Good+. Volumes I, II, III and IV. In red cloth with pictorial paper label on spines. Volume II with slight damp staining to bottom corners of page edges, else light rubbing to cloth of each volume.
Hardbound. 3/4 leather with five raised bands (each volume), xxxvi, 1836 pp. over 2000 bw illus. This display-quality set has held up very well over the years. Each volume contains lists of outlines of paintings, portraits of painters, and monograms and signatures, and a bibliography. The many thousands of entries for European and American artists and artworks are alphabetical with cross references. This edition contains an original etching in each volume. They are are (in order): Joan of Arc by Jules Bastien-Lepage (etched by Sidney L. Smith); Reading From Homer, by L. Alma-Tadema (etched by James D. Smillie); Diana's Hunting Party, by Hans Makart (etched by Sidney L. Smith); and An American Sunset, by George Inness (etched by Thomas Moran). All four etchings are quite fresh. VG, lovely gilt designs in spine compartments.
Hardbound. Vellum embossed covers with red leather spines or re-backed remnants thereof. Top edges gilt, also described elsewhere as: "Quarter red goatskin with parchment boards, top edge gilt, printing on spine and boards is gilt imprinted plus decorative gilt imprinted from arts and crafts movement" xxxvi, 1836 pp. over 2000 bw illus. This edition also contains 12 full-page illustrations per volume, some of which are original etchings (2 per volume) the rest being photogravures. This utility-quality set has held up very well over the years. Each volume contains lists of outlines of paintings, portraits of painters, and monograms and signatures, and a bibliography. The many thousands of entries for European and American artists and artworks are alphabetical with cross references. This edition contains two original etchings in each volume. From a limited printing of 500 copies, this being set No. 286. Good with signs of wear to extremities, some spines re-backed, various bookplates inside including a withdrawn staamp from academic library, internally VG and clean.
