Rolfe, John C. (translator). (illustrator). Rolfe, John C. (translator). Gentili, Alberico [1552-1608]. Three Books on the Law of War. (1612 English ed. of De Iure [Jure] Belli Libri Tres). Carnegie Classics of International Law series. Volume 2: English translation of 1612 edition of De Jure Belli Libri Tres. [Translated] by John C. Rolfe. Introduction by Coleman Phillipson. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1933. Reprint. W.S. Hein, 1995. 52a, vi, 479, [3] pp. Tan buckram hardcover, with black spine lettering. New. $195. * The 1933 English translation of a foundational work of international law written by the Italian jurist Alberico Gentili in the late 16th century. The work is considered one of the earliest systematic treatises on the laws of war. It is divided into three volumes: the first discusses the law on the right to go to war (ius ad bellum); the second covers the laws governing the conduct of war (ius in bello); and the third addresses the laws concerning the end of war and the restoration of peace (ius post bellum). Gentili's approach was novel for its time because it applied international legal principles to concrete historical and contemporary cases rather than focusing purely on legal commentary. He advocated for a secular interpretation of the law of war, arguing that it should be based on the actual practices of civilized nations and tempered by moral considerations rather than religious authority. An Italian jurist, Gentili fled Italy in 1579 due to religious persecution because of his Protestant beliefs. He was welcomed in England, where he became a Regius Professor of Civil Law at Oxford University. He is considered a co-founder and "Father of International Law". His work on the laws of war was highly influential, paving the way for later jurists like Hugo Grotius.
