[Naval History] FINELY BOUND BY CUNEO. Octavo (25 x 18cm), pp.[ii]; xiv; [ii]; 287; [3]. Finely bound in half blue morocco with marbled card over boards, raised bands to spine, detailed and illustrative gilt tooling to spine with four small red in-lays, titled in gilt to spine. Edges of textblock gilt, marbled endpapers. Eight tissue-guarded, colour illustrated plates throughout including a frontispiece. Chapter head and tailpieces. Sunning to spine. Near fine. First published in 1813 by the eccentric Romantic poet Robert Southey, this extensive biography of Horatio Nelson was, at least at the time of this republication, 'the chief source from which the national imagination, or idea, of Nelson has been created' (introduction). This copy has been finely bound by Cuneo; the gilt tooling and attractive marbled boards make it a very handsome copy.
