Ex-library book of The Midland Assocation of Mountaineers (bookplate to front). Covers worn and bumped with wear to head and foot of spine. Some fraying to gutters and glue mark to spine, from an old library label. Binding loose but intact with hinges beginning to crack. With careful handling the binding should hold but it is fragile. Previous owners' names and notes to endpapers. Periodic small library stamps throughout. Main frontis map badly torn but complete. 7 of the other 8 maps present with folding faults resulting edges protruding from the text block and with the odd small tear but generally in reasonable condition. Map of Mont Blanc area is missing. Text has some general marking but remains perfectly readable. As previously mentioned, this is a tired copy of an important mountaineering guide that is looking for an understanding owner. 612pp. (Ua3).

Der Geologe und Bergsteiger Hayden (1869-1923) war Direktor des «Geological Survey of India» und nahm an verschiedenen Expeditionen teil. Er war einer der Mitberünder und später Präsident des «Indian Science Congress» und Mitglied der «Asiatic Society of Bengal», 1917-1918 deren Präsident. Hayden kam am 12. August 1923 zusammen mit seinen beiden Bergführern durch einen Felssturz beim Abstieg vom Finsteraarhorn ums Leben, seine Leiche und die von César Cosson wurden erst am 28. August gefunden, beide wurden in Lauterbrunnen bestattet. - Einband etwas fleckig und im Rückengelenk angerissen. Etwas locker im Gelenk. Vortitelblatt und letzte Seite gebräunt.
