He was a pioneer archaeologist, who recorded (often for the first time) numerous megalithic & other field monuments in southern England, & who is particularly noted for his systematic examination of the Avebury henge monument. The Aubrey holes at Stonehenge are named after him, although there is considerable doubt as to whether the holes that he observed are those that currently bear the name. He was also a pioneer folklorist, collecting together a miscellany of material on customs, traditions & beliefs under the title "Remaines of Gentilisme and Judaisme". He set out to compile county histories of both Wiltshire & Surrey, although both projects remained unfinished. His "Interpretation of Villare Anglicanum" (also unfinished) was the first attempt to compile a full-length study of English place-names. He had wider interests in applied mathematics & astronomy, & was friendly w/ many of the greatest scientists of the day. For much of the 19th & 20th centuries, thanks largely to the popularity of "Brief Lives", Aubrey was regarded as little more than an entertaining but quirky, eccentric & credulous gossip. Only in the 1970s did the full breadth & innovation of his scholarship begin to be more widely appreciated. He published little in his lifetime, & many of his most important manuscripts (for the most part preserved in the Bodleian Library) remain unpublished, or published only in partial form. -Wikipedia, where rich additional details may be found. * SHIPPING: MNEMOSYNE carefully wraps, labels & custom-packages this fine book for FREE domestic shipment via USPS MEDIA MAIL or USPS PRIORITY MAIL for our posted below-cost additional fee of $12.00 & via USPS FIRST CLASS INTERNATIONAL AIRMAIL to all international destinations at our posted rates.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Second printing. Tan cloth with gilt lettering and decoration. 324 pages. Portraits. No slipcase. A clean, attractive copy. "John Aubrey's Brief Lives is one of the strangest books -- if indeed this collection of notes, excerpts, gossip and dry facts can be called a book -- to have achieved literary fame. Their author was equally strange, in his way: a gentleman with the learned turn of mind, yet little formal education, a lover of books and manuscripts, yet almost penniless, a would-be scholar who loved worldly company as much as that of serious men, who spent the last twenty years of his life living in other people's houses, on the run from his creditors.

Paperback. John Aubrey's racy portraits of the great figures of 17th-centuryEngland stand alongside Pepys's diary as a vivid evocation of theperiod. Aubrey was born in 1626, the son of a Wiltshire squire; at theage of 26 he inherited a family estate encumbered with debt, andfinally went bankrupt in the 1670s. From then on he led a sociable, rootless existence at the houses of friends - from Oxford and theMiddle Temple -pursuing the antiquarian studies which hadalwaysobsessed him. At his death in 1697 he left a mass of notes andmanuscripts, among them the material for Brief Lives. He nevermanaged to put even a single life into logical order; all we have arethe raw materials, scribbled down -`tumultuously as they occurred to mythoughts'. With this full, modern English edition, whichreproduces Aubrey's words as closely as possible, Richard Barberintroduces us to Aubrey and his world, tells how theLives cameinto being and enables many new readers to enjoy this eccentricmasterpiece. Very good condition. Light shelf-scuffing on cover.
