Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Printing [Stated]. Format is approximately 9.25 inches by 10.25 inches. [12], 115, [1] pages. Illustrations. Suggested Reading. Includes essays by Dr. Karl Z. Morgan and Dr. Susan D. Lambert. Ex-library with the usual library markings. DJ is price clipped. James Lera…ger is a social documentary photographer, author of the book âIn The Shadow Of The Cloud: Photographs and Histories of America's Atomic Veterans', and âNuclear History - Nuclear Destiny' and âMexico: Portraits of Complexity.' James has mounted 35 solo photography exhibitions in the United States, Europe, and Latin America, and published in some 30 countries. He holds a Masters in Public Policy from the University of California, Berkeley. James received Fulbright Fellowships to teach and photograph in Medellín, Colombia (2004-2005 and 2007). He is currently director of the Documentary Photography and Research Project and photography editor for the academic journal âLatin American Perspectives.' In his photographic work, James uses series of photographs, together with words, to tell stories. His intention in his own work is to use the power of photographs to communicate about complex issues, to engage and inform an audience, and help generate positive societal change. The majority of his photography exhibitions, publications, and book projects are based in extended essays, using photography's inherent strength as a potentially potent symbolic language to engage and inform the viewer, in ways that words alone seldom can. Over 200,000 U.S. servicemen were deliberately exposed to nuclear radiation between 1945 and 1960, primarily at the atomic bomb testing sites in Nevada and the Pacific Ocean. Photojournalist Lerager presents the human side of this controversial issue in this compilation of photographs and sympathetic one-page profiles of 40 ``atomic veterans.'' Though five men report no ill effects, the rest have experienced a variety of maladies, the most common and deadly being cancer. Nonetheless, the Veterans Administration has persistently denied medical claims resulting from radiation exposure, and since the men were performing in the line of duty, they are prohibited by law from suing the government. While telling only one side of the story, this work is compelling. Reviewed by Richard W. Grefrath, University of Nevada Library, Reno. Jim Lerager (illustrator).
