Jérôme né vers 347 à Stridon, (en actuelle Slovénie ou Croatie), et mort le 30 septembre 420 à Bethléem, est un moine, traducteur de la Bible, Docteur de l'Église et l'un des quatre Pères de l'Église latine. La correspondance de Jérôme constitue la partie la plus intéressante de son uvre conservée (outre la traduction de la Bible), par la variété de la matière et la qualité du style. Edition rare avec l'adresse du libraire parisien Julien Bertault. Nous n'avons trouvé que 5 exemplaires au CCfr à la même date de 1599, même collation mais tous à des adresses différentes: Jean Febvrier, Jean Lombard, Jean Le Bouc et Jacques Rezé. Très certainement une édition partagée.…

As protégé of Pope Damasus I, Jerome was given duties in Rome, and he undertook a revision of the Vetus Latina Gospels based on Greek manuscripts. He also updated the Psalter containing the Book of Psalms then in use in Rome, based on the Septuagint. Saint Jerome in His Study, 1451, by Antonio da Fabriano II, shows writing implements, scrolls, and manuscripts testifying to Jerome's scholarly pursuits. The Walters Art Museum. Throughout his epistles he shows himself to be surrounded by women and united with close ties; it is estimated that 40% of his epistles were addressed to someone of the female sex and,[16] at the time, he was criticized for it.
