Lead editor Jensen, a highly-respected historian, died in 1980, and the work was continued by Gordon DenBoer, who had been an assistant on the first volume. Volume one appears to have served in some production or proof capacity, with some ruled pencil lines on the Contents page, a painted patch on the spine, and a printer's specification leaf glued to the rear endsheet; all volumes show some wear, page edges foxed/spotted, light foxing/tanning to endsheets, pencil name in volume two; jackets rubbed with minor chipping, short tears, creases.
